Bucks fall in finals to host Bulldogs 67-37
By Bees O’Brien
Claysburg- Bucktail’s boys basketball run at the Claysburg-Kimmel tip-off tournament came to an end in the championship finals on Saturday evening. The host Bulldogs, who edged Portage on Friday night simply out–hustled the less experienced Bucktail squad to cruise to a 67-37 victory.
The Bucks kept things close through the first quarter of play and only trailed 15-11 after one quarter. Claysburg-Kimmel then began to target Gavin Pick.
The junior scored 19 points in Bucktail’s semifinal win on Friday night, but he quickly found himself with his fourth personal foul in the second quarter.
With Pick on the bench, the 2A Bulldogs began to go to work. The Bucks offense began to sputter without their team leader. Bucktail managed just 5 second quarter points to the Bulldogs 14 in the frame.
CK’s halftime lead swelled to 29-16.
The second half began like the first half ended for the Bucks. Claysburg-Kimmel uses a balance attack to net 23 points in the third quarter, despite the Bucks netting 14 points in the frame.
Trailing 52-30 heading into the final quarter of play, Bucktail finished strong, being outscored 15-7.
Corbin Pentz led the Bucks with 12 points and a team-high 9 rebounds. Aidan Ditty scored 10 points and Landon Charcalla dropped in 8 points in the loss.
Pick finished with 3 points, but still managed to do enough to be named to the All-Tournament team.
Christian Treon and Brayden Haney led the Bulldogs with 14 points each. Blake Kulick added 13 points and Cory Walter added 12 points for the 2-0 Bulldogs.
Now 1-1, the Bucks will next be in action December 9 when they host St. John Neumann in their Mid Penn Conference opener in Farwell.
