The lights go out on Bucktail’s season in 36-34 heartbreaker
By Bees O’Brien
FARWELL- Imagine driving down the field with momentum on your side and with just 48 seconds remaining in the game and your team was down by two points. Then complete black. That’s exactly what Bucktail dealt with on Friday night. After a long season of being on the wrong end of mercy rule losses, the Bucks felt like all of their hard work was about to payoff and then the lights went off, which due to Bucktail having to rely on somebody 30 miles away to turn back on the lights. The half hour delay seemed to kill Bucktail’s momentum and their opponents, Columbia Montour Vo-Tech forced a turnover to ice a 36-34 victory over the Bucks on senior night.
The Bucks had to contend with CMVT sophomore quarterback Myles Koser, who entered the game with over 1,500 yards passing on the season. Koser hurt the Bucks both through the air and on the ground.
Koser and his Rams took their opening possession down the field with lightning quick precision. Quick passes to Axton Koser and Matt Allen set up Myles Koser to call his own number from five yards out to give the visiting Rams a quick 6-0 lead with 9:49 remaining in the opening quarter.
Bucktail responded and behind the running of Levi Stevenson and Corbin Pentz, they bullied their way down to the one-yard line. Stevenson’s score from one-yard out followed by a two-point conversion from Stevenson had the Bucks up 8-0 with 4:47 remaining in the first quarter.
Less than a minute later, Koser’s passing attack set up his second touchdown run of the game. His score from six yards out was followed by a conversion pass to Axton Koser to life CMVT up on the Bucks 14-8.
The second quarter seen more of the same from CMVT. Koser would rifle a 55-yard bomb to Blake Sponenberg for a score and with just six seconds remaining in the half it Koser to Koser from six yards out to give the Rams the 28-8 lead at the break.
Bucktail looked to be heading towards another mercy rule defeat, but CMVT wasn’t expecting Bucktail’s second half surge.
Corbin Pentz, just a freshman helped orchestrate one of the most memorable comebacks in Bucktail football history.
Pentz found his groove and his receivers began to make big plays. Teagan Stone started things for Bucktail on a 40-yard touchdown catch, but the conversion attempt failed.
Down 28-14, the Bucks had new life heading into the final quarter of play. The feel of the game began to shift towards the home team and Stevenson’s second touchdown run of the night from five yards out and the two-point conversion catch by Aidan Ditty from Pentz had the Bucks within striking distance with 11:44 remaining in the game, down 28-22.
Bucktail completed their comeback when Pentz found Branson Getz deep across the middle on a 70-yard catch and run for a thrilling score that knotted the score at 28 each.
Bucktail failed to convert the first of two conversion attempts down the stretch that came back to haunt the Bucks.
Myle Koser was far from done on the night. His 55-yard strike to Matt Allen for the touchdown with 7:09 remaining in the game and a Blake Sponenberg two-point catch had the Rams up 36-28.
Back came Bucktail. Pentz orchestrated one final scoring drive, that included a 28-yard catch from Nick Dennis and a 29-yard touchdown catch from Teagan Stone. The Bucks failed on a run attempt for two points and trailed 36-34 with 3:41 remaining.
Bucktail’s defense held Koser and company, forcing a punt. Pentz began to lead the Bucktail charge with some strong runs.
Then the lights went out with momentum on Bucktail’s side.
When the lights came back on in Farwell, Pentz picked up where he left off by running for back-to-back first downs to keep his team in the game. A late interception ended the Bucks hopes at picking up their first win on the field for 2025.
CMVT finishes the season 4-6, while the Bucks’ season comes to an end at 1-9.
Pentz’s 166 yards rushing and his 182 yards through the air led Bucktail. Myles Koser led the Rams on the ground with 125 yards and he lit up the Bucktail secondary for 259 yards passing.
Teagan Stone’s 93 yards receiving led the Bucks. Axton Koser paced Columbia Montour Vo Tech with 119 yards receiving.
