Words of Grace

By Rev. Mahlon Nevel

The evangelistic service was over, and all the people were leaving to go home. But one man stayed to talk to the evangelist.

“My heart is so hard,” he confessed, “and it seems as if I am in chains. I want to come to Jesus, but I just can’t.”

“Come along, chain and all,” said the preacher, and he right then came to Christ, chain and all, and the Lord snapped the fetters, and set him free.

Commenting on this incident, D. L. Moody said that if we are bound by the devil, it is the work of God to break the chains. We cannot break them ourselves.

“Shackled by a heavy burden, Beneath a load of quilt and Shame; Then the hand of Jesus touched me, And now I am no longer the same.”

The story is told of a man who was in a hospital, very seriously ill. A Christian who was concerned about his spiritual condition visited him.

“Is there anything that I can do for you?” he asked.

“No,” the sick man answered, “not a thing.”

The same question was repeated each day for the next several days. The same answer was given each time.
Finally, the sick man told him, “You can’t do anything for me, but tell me, is there anything that can undo?”

Thank God, there is something that can undo, and the Christian told him about the precious blood of Christ.
