Lady Wildcats Win District VI 5A Title
By Tom Elling
CRESSON- In the post-game interview, CM softball coach Taylor Thompson described her initial season as a head coach at Central Mountain as ‘thrilling’ as her team won a ten-run rule game over Hollidaysburg at Mount Aloysius field in Cresson.
“I can’t be more pleased or thrilled on how our season went. I can’t think of a better way to start my career,” the smiling coach offered.
There was a lot to be thrilled about as the Lady Wildcats dominated in all phases of the game. Most especially in the hitting department. Catcher Katelyn Bowman sparkled defensively and showed power at the plate with a two-run first inning home run and 4th inning two-run triple. She scored two of the 12 runs.
She had four other teammates have multiple hits- Cirstyn Watson (3-3 and an RBI), Aubrey Eiler (2-3 with an RBI), Cora Myers (2-4 with a single and a game-ending two-run dinger), and Josey Shultz (2-3).
Even the bunting was an effective weapon as Ava Doyle and Eiler laid down two beauties- Eiler’s producing a run in the 2nd after Camdyn Weaver walked, moved to second on a wild pitch then moved up to 3rd on the Doyle effort. Weaver scored on a bunt down the first base side by Eiler.
Weaver also was effective on the mound. She surrendered seven hits and four walks, but gave up just one run in the 4th. She pitched herself out of several jams, getting some big strike outs. In the fourth, she surrendered three hits and a walk, but got a huge ‘K’ leaving the bases loaded.
“Camdyn is a competitor,” Thompson remarked. “She is intense and at times gets mad at herself. She is just a sophomore. I had to remind her to calm down and let her defense help her out.”
That defense played an errorless game with outstanding plays made by Bowman and a perfect throw from Center Fielder Taylor Doyle to nip Lady Golden Tiger Sophia Morris trying to score on a Genna Peacock single. Myers also made a diving attempt to snag a soft, low looped in foul territory.
The D6 champions will wait to see who survives the District 8/9 contest. That game will be played on May 27th with the probable site being Bald Eagle Area or back at Mount Aloysius.
The site of the game weighed not at all on Thompson’s mind as she was just taking the time to savor her team’s title.
