By Bees O’Brien
Hughesville- The Lady Spartans of Hughesville continued to show why they could be the team to beat in District IV 3A.
Hughesville pounded out 12 hits and used a big 7-run second inning to go on to defeat the defending two-time champion Lady Bucks 12-2. It was the Lady Spartans second win over Bucktail this season.
Lola English, who went 2 for 3 in the contest gave the Lady Bucks an early 1-0 lead when she scored on an Eva Sockman hit, but Hughesville matched that in their half of the first inning before the 7-run bottom of the second from the host Lady Spartans.
Hughesville turned the contest into a 10-2 lead following a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.
The Lady Bucks tried one last rally in the top of the sixth inning when Makenna Stone crossed the plate, but Hughesville implemented the 10-run rule by scoring a pair of runs to set the 12-2 final.
Sockman joined English to lead the Lady Bucks offense with two hits. The junior duo accounted for the only hits for Bucktail on the day.
With the loss, Bucktail’s record drops to 3-4. The Lady Bucks will next be in action on Wednesday when they are set to meet a tough Northwest (6-1) Lady Rangers squad in Farwell.
