Jersey Shore Dominates Selinsgrove in District IV Playoff Opener, Advances to Finals
By Doug Byerly
As the District IV, 4 A playoffs begin, two longtime rivals matched up
again this time in the first round with the Seals of Selinsgrove coming
to Jersey Shore to take on the Bulldogs.
The Seals came in at 5-5, with all the losses coming to playoff teams,
while ‘Shore came in at 7-3 with a good rivalry win vs. Central
Mountain last week.
After the teams traded punts and both offenses fumbled to the
opposing defenses, the Jersey Shore offense got untracked and
scored first on a 21 yard run by Evan Snyder on a jet sweep. The
score came with 4:30 left in the first quarter. Paul Hale added the
PAT kick and the Bulldogs led 7-0.
In the second quarter, āShore took control of the game with three
scoring drives to extend their lead to 28-0 at the half.
QB Elijah Jordan found Bo Sechrist on a scramble for a nice 35 yard
pass play for the score at the 9:33 mark; the Hale PAT extended the
Bulldog lead to 14-0.
The second score of the quarter came on a Jordan to Luke
Thompson pass play. On the play, Jordan scrambled and found the
junior tight end in the back of the end zone for the 4 yard score
(4:17): the Hale PAT extended the āShore lead to 21-0.
The Bulldogs added another score just before the half after a nice
Evan Snyder punt return into Seals territory. Bo Sechrist converted
on a 4th down, 2 yard such with just 46 seconds before the break.
Paul Hale converted the PAT to extend the lead at the half to 28-0.
After halftime, the Bulldog defense got into the scoring column for the
first time this season. With Selinsgrove in great field position, Brody
Herr scooped up a fumble and raced 55 yards for a score (9:18).
The Hale PAT made the score 35-0.
Selinsgrove avoided the shutout with a nice 58 yard pass play from
QB Rocco to Jacob Beddal. The junior tight end took a short pass
and sprinted 58 yards to scored (8:57, 3rd qtr). Walter added the
PAT and the Jersey Shore lead was narrowed to 35-7.
The Bulldog defense came up big again as Brody Herr made a big hit
on the QB and the ball was gathered in by senior defensive lineman
Owen Vandruff who danced into the end zone for his first career
score from 7 yards (2:18). The PAT kick was missed and the ‘Shore
lead extended to 41-7.
The final score of the game came on a 4 yard Brody Herr run. Hale
PAT makes the score 48-7.
The Bulldogs were led on the ground by Sechrist’s 70 yards and a
TD along with Brody Herr with 17 carries with 89 yards and a score.
Through the air Jordan led the way with 191 yards and 2 TDS.
The loss ends the season for Selinsgrove with an overall record of 5-
6.
Jersey Shore improves to 8-3 with the win and will travel to
Shamokin for the District IV, 4 A final next week. Game day and time
to be announced on Sunday.
