Renovo Area Community Choir to Present “Your Hit Parade!”
RENOVO- The Renovo Area Community Choir will be presenting their Spring Concert “Your Hit Parade”, Sunday May 5, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. First United Methodist Church, 7th Street Renovo, will once again be hosting the concert. The choir is under the direction of Patricia Lacy and accompanied by Brandon Kahley, music teacher at Bucktail Area High School.
Recognizing the choir has through the years sung songs from 1918 up to 2014 a century of music, this concert highlights a song from each of the decades in order starting with a well-known spiritual, “Down By the Riverside”.
The popular “Blue Skies’’ was a last-minute addition composed for the Rodgers and Hart musical Betsy in 1926.
Even though you may not know the words, everyone will recognize the fun piano duet “Heart and Soul”. Moving us into the 1940, Courtney Billings will be singing the nostalgic wartime hit, “I’ll Be Seeing You”. “Sixteen Tons’ ‘ written about a coal miner is based on life in the mines in Muhlenberg, Kentucky.
“Unchained Melody” was written in 1955 but became one of the most recorded songs made popular by the Righteous Brothers in 1965 and then later featured in the movie “Ghost” in 1990. Perry Como’s “Catch a Falling Star ‘’ became a hit with the teens from the 50’s into the 60’s. Erica Dorman will be singing “I Will Follow Him” recorded in 1963 and made a comeback in 1992 in the film,”Sister Act”, starring Whoopi Goldberg. The Carpenters hit the #1 on Billboard Hot 100 with “Top of the World” in 1973.
Take a trip to a relaxing place called “Kokomo’’, a song by the Beach Boys from the 1988 film, “Cocktail” featuring the bartender… Tom Cruise. Dolly Parton’s “9 to 5” will be sung by Autumn Gavlock. This number was written for the comedy film “9 to 5” featuring Dolly, Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda. “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” was written for the Disney 1994 animated film, “The Lion King ‘’.
Moving us into the 2000s, Kedda Bissman will be singing an Adele favorite, “Rollin in the Deep”. Reminding us to let go of frustrations and just dance, the choir will rock with “Shut Up and Dance”, followed by another fun number “Best Day of My Life”.
Closing out our century of music is a song that is close to our hearts, “As Long As I Have Music”. We consider this as one of our theme songs since it speaks of how music is our source of strength and gets us through the highs and lows of life, through happiness and tears.
