New sports and recreation business, The Golden Axe, to open in Lock Haven

LOCK HAVEN, PA – Lock Haven residents will have a new recreational spot to test their skills and have a great time with the opening of The Golden Axe this October. Located in a portion of the former state liquor store on E. Main Street in downtown Lock Haven, this sports and recreational establishment aims to provide a fun and entertaining space for all ages come this October.

Owners Travis and Beth Moyer are no strangers to the area, with deep roots and family ties in Lock Haven. “We want to create an area where people can go to have a good time,” Travis explains. “There really is not too much out there for our younger generations anymore, and I feel a place like this will be fun for all ages.”

The main attraction at The Golden Axe is hatchet-throwing, a thrilling game that combines skill and competition. According to the owners, there will be seven lanes for hatchet throwing, each with a wooden board at the end where participants aim and throw an axe to score points, similar in some ways to dart throwing but requiring slightly more force.

The owners told The Record that there will be several different types of axe games for participants to choose from and spoke about the appeal of hatchet throwing, “I think what makes it fun is that it’s a new learning experience, and once you get the hang of it, it can be a good stress reliever,” they added.

Hatchet-throwing is not the only activity that will be available at The Golden Axe: “We will also have cornhole, darts, pool tables, snacks for purchasing, and “Raging Bulls” which are Redbull drinks that we flavor with your choice of flavorings and juice “toppers.” “We will have several large big screen televisions for major sporting events, and a few other arcade games,” the owners said.

The owners noted that while they have no plans to serve alcoholic beverages, the establishment will allow patrons to bring their own alcohol if they choose. “We do have a BYOB facility, however, we want to make sure that this is a family-fun environment. We want this to be fun and safe for the whole community.”

Owners Travis and Beth also want to make use of the large space in the former liquor store to accommodate tournaments for axe throwing, cornhole, darts, and pool. They say that they will allow leagues for these activities to rent out their space and run their own tournaments.

In addition to hosting tournaments, The Golden Axe will also accommodate large groups for events such as birthday parties or bachelor parties, to name a few.

In terms of safety, the owners plan to have an “axe master” present at each lane to ensure that participants are learning how to handle the axe safely and are following the safety rules which will be posted in the lanes. Participants must be at least 12 years of age and need to be able to safely throw an axe. Minors will need to have a guardian present to participate. In order to use the axe-throwing lanes, all participants will need to sign a waiver.

The owners expressed their excitement about opening the sports and recreational facility and look forward to being part of the downtown Lock Haven community. “We want to engage with the community and let everyone know that we are here for an exciting adventure and cannot wait to bring a fun, positive, family-friendly environment to the area.”
