Winning photo selected in Logan Mills Covered Bridge photo contest

LOCK HAVEN, PA – Mackeyville resident George Masden snapped the picture that will appear on the Clinton County Economic Partnership Visitors Bureau’s second puzzle in the ‘Clinton County Landmarks’ puzzle series. The winning image of the Covered Bridge at Logan Mills was selected from more than 30 photos submitted in the recent ‘Capture the Covered Bridge’ photo contest. It will be the “face” of a 550-piece, 18×24-inch jigsaw puzzle.

“Amateur and professional photographers alike submitted pictures of the Covered Bridge for consideration,” says CCEP Tourism Director Julie Brennan. “George could probably be placed somewhere in the middle, as a semi-professional photographer. While he doesn’t take pictures for a living, he has honed his skill over the years and has exhibited and sold some of his photographs.”

Masden enjoys capturing images from Sugar Valley such as the Amish, farmland and seasonal produce. He says the Covered Bridge at Logan Mills is a favorite subject because it offers a different perspective depending on the time of year the picture is taken. His winning photograph in fact captures the covered bridge in winter, surrounded by snow.

Brennan says there were some really great pictures submitted for the photo contest, so narrowing it down to one winning photograph wasn’t easy. A panel of four judges reviewed the entries.

“We thank Carol Cillo, a very talented artist with a keen eye who serves as President of the Clinton County Arts Council. Carol judged the photo contest last year for our inaugural puzzle of Hyner View and we invited her back this year,” says Brennan. “Also judging was Helen Imes, representing the Sugar Valley Historical Society, and Logan Mills residents Claudia Albertin and Glenn Vernon, who live and work in the shadow of the Covered Bridge.”

“The winning photo offers a stunning, yet simplistic look at the Covered Bridge, covered in snow and framed by bare branches, with blue skies and the mountain in the background. It’s a beautiful picture that we know will also make a challenging puzzle,” adds Brennan.

As he did last year, local artist Steve Getz with the Clinton County Arts Council, will design the box for this year’s puzzle. In addition to the picture on the front, the box will include information about the Covered Bridge and the winning photographer.

All of the photographs submitted for the contest are posted on the Visitors Bureau’s Explore Clinton County, PA Facebook page.

“We appreciate the enthusiasm and participation in the photo contest,” says Brennan. “We plan to use the entries for various other projects to more fully showcase the beauty of this special local landmark.”

Meanwhile, the Visitors Bureau is taking pre-orders through the end of May for the limited-edition puzzle, with the pre-orders helping to determine the number of puzzles to be ordered. Like last year, the cost of the puzzle will be $18, tax included, with payment due when the puzzles arrive locally in early September.

“We organized the contest so we could select the winning photo and then have the puzzle manufactured in time to be here for the Sugar Valley Historical Society’s annual Museum Open House in mid-September. It will also be here in plenty of time for Christmas gift-giving,” says Brennan.
