Lady Bucks upset bid falls short against South, 47-40
FARWELL- Bucktail entered their Mid Penn Conference battle against Mid Penn Conference leaders South Williamsport with hopes of stunning the 5-1 Lady Mounties and they came close to that feat. In the end it was the more experienced South team that fought off a strong surge from the underdogs and creeped by with a 47-40 conference win on the road.
The Lady Bucks dominated the glass by pulling down 41 rebounds behind 17 boards from Eva Sockman in her first game of the season. Kendall Wagner added 12 rebounds to go along with her game-high 18 points.
Bucktail fell behind early. Seven turnovers quickly mounted to an 11-1 South Williamsport lead. This forced Bucktail head coach Suellen Wagner to burn a timeout at the 3:04 mark.
Kendall Wagner responded by finding Sockman for the Lady Bucks first field goal of the game.
Bucktail’s 4-0 run to close out the quarter had them trailing 11-5 after one frame.
The Lady Bucks received a huge gift with 7:25 remaining in the half. South’s leading scorer Ella Moore was forced to the bench when she picked up her third personal foul.
Adrielle Intallura’s three-point basket with 4:40 remaining in the half sparked a big Bucktail run. Baskets from Kendall Wagner, Kelsie Wagner and again from Kendall had the Lady Bucks down one at 17-16 with 3:35 left in the first half.
Kelsie Wagner’s offensive putback gave Bucktail an 18-17 lead. South jumped up again, but another Kelsie Wagner score gave her team a 20-19 lead.
Each team closed out the half with three points each and South Williamsport held a slim 23-22 lead in a quarter that seen Bucktail outscore the visitors 17-12.
Bucktail knotted things up at 26 with a free throw from Kendall Wagner, but an 8-3 South run over the span of two minutes had the Lady Bucks down 34-29. Arionna Winkelman’s basket in the quarter’s final minute ended the run.
Bucktail trailed South 34-33 heading into the final quarter of play and took the lead when Kendall Wagner found Winkelman with 6:20 remaining in the game.
Back-to-back Lady Mountie three-pointers helped South regain the lead at 40-36 with four minutes remaining. South closed out the game with a 5-4 advantage to set the final.
Kelsie Wagner joined Kendall Wagner in double figures with 11 points. She also swatted a pair of blocks. Bucktail as a team blocked a total of 8 South Shots. Kendall Wagner’s four blocks led Bucktail. Sockman also collected a pair of blocks.
Bucktail dropped to 2-2 on the season and 0-1 within the conference. The Lady Bucks will have two chances before the holiday break to pick up a Mid Penn Conference win. They will host a pair of games. Monday Muncy will come to Farwell and Montgomery is set to do the same on Tuesday.
