Wildcat baseball downs Heartland Division II leader Midd-West, 11-0
BEAVER SPRINGS, PA – With postseason play looming next week, the Central Mountain baseball team gives every indication of being ready to defend its District 6 title. The Wildcats traveled to Beaver Springs to take on Midd-West, the Heartland Conference Division II leader with a 9-1 conference mark and 15-2 overall entering Monday’s contest.
It proved to be no contest, the Wildcats scoring early and often on the way to a 6-inning, 11-0 win. And while CM pounded out 14 hits, Wildcat pitcher Brady Myers was all but untouchable. The Central Mountain junior pitched a six-inning complete game, striking out eight, walking two and giving up just two hits.
The Wildcats put up three runs in the first, single markers in innings two and three and finished up with six in the sixth on the way to the shutout win.
Three Wildcats clubbed homeruns: Cru Stover, Kelvin Probst and Levi Schlesinger. Stover added two singles and an RBI while Elek Fravel was 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Schlesinger totaled four runs batted in, Probst two. Braylen Corter had two singles, as did Kevin Grenninger. Connor Foltz and Gabe Johnson with singles.
Statewide Maxpreps rankings released on Monday saw the Wildcats drop from the top ten while Midd-West moved in at number nine; that positioning likely to change when the next rankings are posted.
Central Mountain is now 18-1 and finishes its regular season at Jersey Shore on Tuesday. The Bulldogs are 4-14 overall. A Wildcat win would give coach Mike Kramer’s team the championship in the Heartland Division I.
District 6 playoff pairings are expected sometime Tuesday or Wednesday. If the current rankings hold, the Wildcats will play Hollidaysburg, the number two seed, next Monday, May 22, at the Bald Eagle Area field in Wingate. The winner would move into a PIAA tourney play-in game later next week from among DuBois and two Pittsburgh schools, Obama Academy and Brashear.
