Wagner, English and Mason homer in 22-1 win as Bucktail closes in on district’s top spot

BOONEVILLE, PA- Bucktail softball kept their offensive surge chugging along in a big way Friday at Sugar Valley.

The Lady Bucks would use the long ball to their advantage, as Mak Wagner, Lola English and Matti Mason would power Bucktail to a 22-1 3-inning victory over the Lady Phoenix (1-9).

Wagner’s home run would be part of a 13-run first inning for the Lady Bucks. English would plow her first career varsity home run for Bucktail’s lone run in the top of the second.

Mason’s first career home run would come in the third inning, part of an 8-run inning for Bucktail. Sugar Valley would plate a run in the bottom of the third inning to set the final score.

Bucktail blasted 24 hits on the afternoon. English led the charge by going 4 for 5 with the home run and a triple.

Mak Wagner added a double and 4 RBI’s to go along with her long ball. Haley Burrows continued to bring her offensive game to the Bucktail lineup by going 3 for 4 with a triple, a pair of doubles and 4 RBI’s. Eva Sockman would go 3 for 3 with two doubles. Kendall Wagner, Alexis Lowery, Matti Mason and Kayla Probert would collect two hits each and Cecelia Shaffer and Abby Miller would round out the Bucktail hit parade with a single. Every Bucktail player that entered head coach Mike Poorman’s lineup had at least one base hit.

An Olivia Clester single and a Cheyenne Weaver double produced the Phoenix run and provided the home team’s two hits on the day.

Bucktail, now 12-4 on the season is quickly closing in on District 4’s 1A top seed and can make it tough for anybody in the race to catch them with a win at Oswayo Valley on Tuesday. The Lady Bucks’ Monday contest at Sayre has been canceled.

Montgomery (11-7) currently sits in second place and is the only team besides Bucktail to qualify for the District IV 1A playoffs to this point. Canton (9-7) is one win away from earning a spot. St. John Neumann (7-6) and Sullivan County (8-8) each need a pair of wins to punch their tickets into the field.
