Wagner and Stone throw combined no-hitter in Lady Bucks eighth straight win
By Bees O’Brien
MILLVILLE, PA- The Bucktail softball team has now increased their win streak to eight following a 1-2 start to the season. Their 12-0 win at Millville on Thursday was their eighth in a row and now has them just one victory away from clinching their sixth consecutive District 4 1A playoff berth. That win could come Monday when St. John Neumann comes to Farwell, if weather permits.
Bucktail wasted little time in dispatching a struggling Lady Quaker team that has received some lumps this season as they’ve struggled from the circle without their standout pitcher from seasons’ past being available.
Carlee Charles has been one of the conference’s most effective pitchers, but the senior is unable to pitch this season due to a college obligation next season. Her bat was still there and her Mid Penn leading eight home runs were also there, but Charles would go hitless along with every single batter that Bucktail pitchers Mak Wagner and Makenna Stone faced.
Bucktail would cross 4 runs in the top of the first inning, 4 more in the second inning and a pair of runs in each of its next two at bats to force the 12-0 5-inning mercy rule.
Wagner would pitch three innings, while allowing no hits and walking 1 batter. Stone struck out two batters, while only walking one in her one inning in the circle. She also did not allow a Millville hit.
The bats continued to connect well for Lady Bucks team that has now won four games in as many days. Bucktail pounded out 18 hits, led by Mak Wagner, Lola English and Haley Burrows’ 3 hits each. Wagner had a double. Matti Mason collected a pair of hits, as did Alexis Lowery. Eva Sockman, and Kayla Probert each added singles for the 9-2 Lady Bucks.
Millville, a playoff team a season ago fell to 2-10 and will now need to run the table and win their remaining eight games to qualify for the District 4 1A playoffs.
Bucktail will have a challenging week ahead of them starting on Monday when they host playoff contender St. John Neumann (6-4) on Monday. They will then have a challenging back-to-back on Wednesday and Thursday.
On Wednesday it will be a meeting at rival Montgomery (7-4) and then their highly anticipated rematch with Muncy (11-1) on Thursday. The Lady Indians defeated Bucktail 1-0 in Muncy back on April 3. That game should decide the Mid Penn Conference championship.
