Lady Rangers press past Bucktail, 50-31
By Bees O’Brien
FARWELL, PA- For one quarter on Saturday afternoon, head coach Carl Gentzyel’s Lady Bucks were sticking with one of the top teams in District IV 2A.
Bucktail trailed by just four points at 10-6 at the end of one quarter to Northwest. The Lady Rangers entered the contest at 12-4 and were currently sitting in the three spot of the current district standings.
Then it happened.
Northwest applied a deadly 1-2-1-1 zone trap press that spelled doom for Bucktail. The Lady Rangers forced turnover after turnover and would build a 30-14 lead at the break, part of a 20-8 second quarter advantage that would spell the end of the Lady Bucks and their hopes.
Bucktail played much better in the second half and were only outscored 20-17 to set the final.
Kendall Wagner and Matti Mason netted 7 points each to lead Bucktail.
Alexis Lowery and Lily Francis controlled the boards for Bucktail. Lowery grabbed 10 rebounds, while Francis would pull down 7 rebounds before fouling out.
The Lady Bucks will be home on Monday against Juniata Christian School (4-10). Bucktail (6-9) desperately needs a few wins to get back into the playoff hunt. Wednesday they will travel to St. John Neumann (9-6) and finish up their week at Montgomery (2-12) on Saturday afternoon.
