Joseph L.(Popcorn) Sanders Jr., 84 of Woolrich PA, died on January 3, 2023 in the Jersey Shore Hospital surrounded by family.
He was born March 6, 1938 in Lock Haven, PA. He was the son of the late Joseph L.(Soupy) Sanders Sr. and Velma Williams Sanders.
He attended Laurel Run School House and was a 1957 graduate of Lock Haven High School and also The Pennsylvania State Police Municipal Police Academy, Hershey PA.
Joe was married to the former Patricia (Sissy) Lehman on November 4, 1961, in the St. Agnes Roman Catholic Church, Lock Haven PA.
Joe was employed by Lock Haven News Agency, The Garden Theatre as the popcorn man, Saxe Store, as a carpenter for Robert Holmes and Blaine McKivison Construction, Clinton Paper Company, in 1966 he was hired by the City of Lock Haven as a Police Patrolman and worked his way up the ranks to Police Chief retiring in 1992 and in 1961 joined the PA Army National Guard retiring in 1998 as a Lieutenant Colonel.
Joe enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing and family crafting projects with his wife. He also enjoyed all his friends, happy hours, and “machines” in the Port Charlotte Florida area.
Joe was a member of Holy Spirit Parish – St. Agnes Roman Catholic Church, Fraternal Order of Police, Life Member of Sons and Daughters of Italy where he served as Orator, Guard, Trustee, State Delegate and District Trustee, Life Member of AMVETS, Fraternal Order of Eagles, American Legion and B.P.O.E.
He is survived by is wife of 61 years, Patricia, and his children, Joseph L Sanders III (Julie), Angela Probst (Brian), Mary Jo Williamson (J. Michael) and Steven Sanders (Dawn).
His grandchildren Kyle Probst (Jessica), Brittany Jo Phoenix (Andrew), Jessica Servano (Steven), Joseph L. Sanders IV (Sierra), Steven Sanders Jr. (Kaela), Hannah Headdings (Kyle), and Wyatt Sanders (Elizabeth).
12 great grandchildren and more expected.
His brothers and sisters, Margaret (Peg) Brungard, Fred (Denny) Sanders, Richard Sanders, Debbie Rayls, Leora Reeder and Deb Crust.
He was preceded in death by granddaughters Danielle Sanders and Carriejo Sanders. His brothers and sisters Thomas Sanders, William Sanders, Sam Sanders, David Sanders, Joan Miller, Janet Seyler, Delores Sanders and Sue Caprio.
A funeral mass will be held Saturday, January 7, 2023 at 12:00 pm in the Holy Spirit Parish – St. Agnes Church, 3 East Walnut St. Lock Haven. Officiating will be Father Joe Jozef. Family and friends will be received in the Gedon Funeral Homes & Cremation Services, LLC, 121 West Main St., Lock Haven on Saturday morning 9:30 until 11:45 am. Interment will be in the St. Agnes Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
The family will provide the flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Lock Haven Catholic School, 311 W. Water St. Lock Haven, PA 17745, Holy Spirit Parish for the upkeeping of the chapel at St. Agnes Catholic Cemetery 3 E. Walnut St., Lock Haven, PA 17745 or New Life Ministries 111 Susquehanna Trail, Northumberland, PA 17857.
