Riggle named 2022 Lee Phillips Community Service Award winner
LOCK HAVEN, PA – The Lock Haven Kiwanis Club had a pleasant surprise for Margaret Riggle when she attended the Kiwanis luncheon Thursday afternoon. The longtime Renovo area volunteer was named the 2022 recipient of the club’s annual Lee Phillips Community Service Award.
The award is named for the late Lee Phillips, a longtime community volunteer who passed away in 2020. As noted by presenter Wayne Allison, the award honors the late Kiwanian’s memory in recognizing “an individual from our community that contributes time and resources to enhance the lives of others.
Allison read off a litany of Riggle’s contributions: the Flaming Foliage Festival steering committee; member of the Greater Renovo Area Heritage Park board of directors; providing housing for queen contests; providing jobs for many young people through ownership of a popular restaurant; helped in the effort to serve over 3,000 meals and check on senior citizen recipients during the pandemic; a major role in Farwell’s Magic in the Air Christmas offering; providing her sewing talents for costumers at Bucktail High School and Heritage Park murder mysteries; financial support to multiple functions in the Renovo area.
Allison said, “Margaret embodies the qualities that Lee Phillips brought to our club and to our community.”
In her comments, Riggle lauded the Renovo area community for its help in the activities for which she was recognized; she said you “do these things because you have a passion.” She noted a 16-year-old Bucktail High School co-ed had helped start the volunteer meals program and community members, as they became aware of the volunteer program, made donations. She talked of the reception for the Magic in the Air show in Farwell which she was involved with from its inception six years ago and put in a plug for this year’s event, scheduled to begin Dec. 10. She invited Kiwanis members to join in a walking tour there this season.
She said, “It’s all the little things that make a difference in your community.” Lock Haven Kiwanis on Thursday thanked Margaret Riggle for her efforts, large and small. As presented Allison said, “If you’re down and out in the Renovo area, Margaret is one of the first to step up and ask, how can I help?”
