Selinsgrove girls’ soccer downs Lady Wildcats

SELINSGROVE, PA – The Central Mountain Lady Wildcats were welcomed to Selinsgrove in what would be a senior night celebration for the home side on Tuesday. The Lady Seals looking to move up the Heartland 1 ranks, finding themself fourth in the league, hosted the number 8 team, the Lady Cats from Central Mountain. Selinsgrove finished on top, 3-0.

The Lady Wildcat soccer team is still struggling to find the net and went behind in the first half. The blue and white thought they may have found an equalizer shortly after when awarded a free kick. Taylor Campbell slotted home a great shot from distance but it was ruled out as it was an indirect kick and did not have a touch prior to hitting the net.

The second half did not start well as the Lady Seals found their second of the game right off the whistle. The visiting team was now chasing the game which opened up space for the home side to take advantage of. A third goal was found after a questionable handball (yet another this season) was placed in a prime position for a cross and an easy tap in.

The Lady Wildcats still competed and tried to play themselves back into the game. The visiting team found some pockets of space and was able to string together some passes and looked convincing at times. Kiahna Jones made some great saves to keep the Lady Wildcats in the game. The score line looked a bit lopsided but the Lady Wildcats were in the game, continue to build, develop and try to do the right things.

The JV team struggled from the opening whistle, falling behind and not able to get themselves into the game. Four goals found the back of the net. With the season end in sight, the JV team will find only a couple of games left for the remainder of the season.

This was the first game of a very rough road ahead. Three more games in the next four days, those being played in consecutive days and against the second and third best teams in the division, as well as downriver rival Jersey Shore, the Lady Wildcats will have a huge mountain to climb while also finding themselves at bare bones with injuries. Coach Ryan Veltri said, “Always thinking positive, the Lady Wildcats are hoping to improve and build upon the good habits that they have created and making sure to continue to build upon the traditions of the program. This is a special group with a lot of potential!”

The challenge starts at home Thursday with Lewisburg at 6 p.m., then at Jersey Shore Friday at 4 p.m. and home with Shikellamy Saturday at 2 p.m.
