Jim Yoder wins season finale and track championship

MILL HALL, PA – Four drivers were in contention for the 2022 Limited Late Model Track Championship coming into the final race of the season. In an epic race to the checkers, Jim Yoder of Selinsgrove won the race and secured his second consecutive championship. Cory Long won the Pro Stocks, Jeffrey Weaver won the 270s and Hunter Flook won the Four Cylinders.

All four drivers in contention for the Limited Late Model Championship led a portion of the feature event in a contested battle. JR Toner started on the pole of the 25-lap feature event and led the first three circuits. Jeremy Ohl advanced from his third starting spot and took the lead on lap number four. On lap number eight, Ohl was leading fellow championship contenders, Matt Cochran, Jim Yoder and JR Toner, and Andrew Yoder was in fifth postion.

Cochran passed Ohl on lap number nine, as Ben Whitaker moved into the top five. Yoder passed Ohl for the second-place position at the race’s halfway point and set his sights on Cochran. The leaders encountered lapped traffic on lap seventeen, which made the race and the battle for the championship intense. On one occasion going down the backstretch, Cochran passed a lapped car on the outside as Yoder passed the car on the inside bringing cheers from the crowd during the final five laps. Whitaker continued to march toward the front of the field and entered the top three with five laps to go. With three laps to go, Yoder made the pass for the win. Cochran brushed the front stretch wall, which allowed Whitaker to take second. Cochran finished third, Andrew Yoder was fourth and Devein Fry was fifth. Sixth through tenth were Wes Bonebrake, Jeremy Ohl, JR Toner, Matt Adams, and Kyle Bachman. Heats were won by Andrew Yoder and JR Toner.

Corey Long of Selinsgrove started on the outside of the front row. Long took the lead at the drop of the green flag. AJ Stroup moved into second on lap number three with Noah Jensen, Brandon Moser and Marc Bitler running in the top five. At the halfway point, Long and Stroup were engaged in a close battle. 2022 track champion Brandon Moser was battling with Johnny Bouse for the fourth and fifth positions. The race ran caution free, with Long holding off Stroup for this second win of the year and setting a new fifteen lap record with a time of 4:05.168. Jensen finished third, Moser was fourth, and Bouse was fifth. Sixth through tenth were Marc Bitler, AJ Hoffman, Noah Kissinger, Rich Fye, and Jason Geesman. Heat race winners were Moser and Bitler.

Logan Hammaker and Tyler Clowes started on the front row of the 270 Micro feature. Hammaker led the first four circuits before the caution came out for Clowes who stopped on the front stretch. With the restart, Jeffrey Weaver took the lead from Hammaker on lap number five. At the halfway mark, Weaver lead Hammaker, Timmy Bittner, Scott Zimmerman, and John Roberts. The remainder of the event ran caution free with Weaver cruising to his tenth victory of the season. The win also ties him for second on the all-time career win list. Hammaker finished second, Timmy Bittner was third and won the 2022 track championship, Zimmerman and Roberts completed the top five. Sixth through tenth were Cory Stabley, Mac Wert, Matt Dixson, Shaun Musser, and Mathew Dixson. Bittner and Weaver won heat races.

Dylan Hoover led the opening lap of the four-cylinder feature event but hit the wall in turns one and two on the second lap taking him out of competition for the evening. Following the restart, Hunter Flook took command of the field, with Larry Beachel and Blake Snyder running in third. Any of the top three were in contention to win the race as they pulled away from the rest of the field and began to encounter lapped traffic on lap number seven. The top three ran hard in the closing laps, with Flook getting the win over Beachel and Snyder. Shawn Stahl and Michael Barret completed the top five. Sixth through tenth were Matt Weaver, Skylar Phillips, Joey Snook, Anthony Potter, and Matt Cochran. Heats were won by Beachel and Stahl. Coty Maines won the track championship.

In the one-on-one streetcar drag racing competition, Gino Snyder of Montgomery drove his Honda Civic to victory lane over Blane Walizer of Beech Creek in a Jeep Cherokee.

The race was the final event of the season at the Clinton County Speedway. The celebration of the 2022 season will take place at the annual awards banquet, which will be held in February. Banquet details will be announced at a later date.
