Bucks cruise past Sheffield in Sutliff debut

By Bees O’Brien

FARWELL, PA – New Bucktail head coach Frank Sutliff’s debut went off without a hitch. The Bucks pounded out 333 yards on the ground and took advantage of three Wolverine turnovers to cruise past District 9 League Section 3 foe Sheffield 42-12.

Bucktail (1-0, 1-0) wasted very little time on their very first possession. Bucktail grinded out yardage on the ground behind the running of Braylon Fantaski, Brett Mason, Tanner Pettingill and quarterback Brody Pentz.

Pentz capped off the Bucks’ first drive with a 29-yard touchdown score. The try for two was no good, but the host Bucks were up 6-0.

The Bucks would force Sheffield to punt on their next possession and it was more of the same with a very effective rushing attack. Bucktail’s offensive line played one of their best games in years and behind that effective unit, the Bucktail wishbone picked apart a short-handed Wolverines squad. Sheffield was missing some key players with Covid related symptoms.

Pentz would deliver a beautiful last second pitch on an option to Brett Mason. Mason would race 36 yards for the score.

The biggest play happened on the ensuing kickoff when Sheffield return man Jeremiah Richardson muffed the kick and it rolled into the hands of Braylon Fantaski.

This would lead to Bucktail’s only pass attempt of the night. Pentz found Fantaski for a 25 yard scoring strike to extend Bucktail’s lead to 20-0 as the first quarter drew to a close.

Bucktail tacked on another score in the second quarter behind the bruising running of Tanner Pettingill and an 11-yard run.

Sheffield (0-1, 0-1) then shifted the momentum midway through the second quarter behind the tough running of quarterback Colby Barr. The sophomore signal caller broke off runs of 11 and 22 yards to keep the Wolverines’ drive alive. Barr would call his own number from the 1-yard line for Sheffield’s first score.

Bucktail grabbed back the momentum in the third quarter in a big way. Braylon Fantaski busted loose on a 61-yard run and a Brett Mason two-point conversion extended the Bucktail lead to 34-6.

Sheffield’s nail in their coffin would come on their next offensive possession when Fantaski would pick off a Barr pass and race 90 yards to the house. Pentz added the two point conversion to extend the lead to 42-6.

With the mercy rule now implemented, the fourth quarter moved on quickly, but not before Sheffield would show some heart and put together a nice drive to end the game. Jeremiah Richardson capped off an excellent game with a 21-yard run for a touchdown to set the final at 42-12. Richardson finished the game with 101 yards on 15 carries.

Braylon Fantaski led Bucktail’s four headed monster ground game with 107 yards on just 7 carries. Brody Pentz racked up 95 yards on 8 attempts. Brett Mason raced for 73 yards on 6 carries and Tanner Pettingill worked for a hard 36 yards on 6 carries. All four each scored touchdowns.

The victory ended Bucktail’s 12-game losing streak that dated back to October of 2020.

The Frank Sutliff era continues in two weeks with a trip to Dutch Country Stadium to face Elk County Catholic. Sheffield will return home to Wolverine Mountain to host Otto-Eldred on Friday.
