Commissioner Snyder urges increased security at schools

LOCK HAVEN, PA – Clinton County Commissioner Jeff Snyder made an impassioned plea for increased security at schools; his call at the commissioners’ Thursday board meeting came in the wake of the recent tragedy at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, which left 19 students and two teachers dead.

Snyder said the public should “insist” to legislators that funding be provided for school security. He said, “It’s a safety issue and that’s all it is.” He said there is a pending bill “out there” and both state and federal governments should provide funding, noting that they provided funding for their own security. Snyder said, “We owe it to our children that they should be able to go to school and not have to worry about whether they’re going to make it home. We owe it to them.” He urged the public “to please take a stand.”

Board member Angela Harding did not disagree with Snyder but said there are “many facets” of the gun issue that need to be addressed, calling the matter “not a one-solution issue.” Harding had called for those in attendance at the meeting to think of Uvalde victims during the commissioners’ moment of silence which opens each meeting.

The brief meeting also heard board chairman Miles Kessinger offer his congratulations to graduating high school seniors in the district. He wished them well and said he hopes they can find employment and remain in Clinton County and urged them to “be safe” during any graduation celebrations.
