LHU Edged 17-16 at Hofstra

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The Lock Haven University wrestling team (0-1) opened the 2014-15 season Sunday with a loss at Hofstra (1-0), 17-16. The host team pulled out the final two bouts to come away a winner.
 

The dual started at 157 pounds and following a loss in the first bout, Lock Haven went on a tear winning the next four matches (165-197).
 
Aaron McKinney (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny), Tyler Wood (West Chester, Pa./West Chester-Rustin), Fred Garcia(Donora, Pa./Ringgold) and Phil Sprenkle (Seven Valleys, Pa./Dallastown) all won for the Bald Eagles during that stretch, as the Bald Eagles didn’t allow a takedown during that four-bout win streak.



McKinney beat Nick Terdick 4-1 at 165, before Wood edged Frank Affronti 4-2 at 174.
 
Garcia, ranked as high as No. 23 at 184 in one preseason poll, picked up his 70th career win with a dominating 10-0 major decision over Jermaine John.
 
Sprenkle then cruised past Michael Oxley 5-0 at 197.
 

Cody Wheeler (Towanda, Pa./Towanda) picked up Lock Haven’s fifth win of the day at 133 pounds, downing Maverick Passaro, 2-1.
 
The Bald Eagles will travel to the Brockport/Oklahoma Invitational on Saturday, November 8 (10 a.m.), hosted by the College at Brockport.
