LHU wrestling falls to Bucknell and Buffalo

LEWISBURG, PA. – The Lock Haven University men’s wrestling team (3-4, 0-1 MAC) travelled to Bucknell on Saturday afternoon and opened its Mid-American Conference (MAC) schedule against Buffalo (5-4, 3-0 MAC) before tangling with the host Bison.

Lock Haven fell by a 21-10 tally to Buffalo in its first MAC dual since Rider on February 22, 2020. In the second match of the day, the Bald Eagles fell to the host Bucknell Bison (4-2) by a 21-15 tally.

Anthony Noto (Lima, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima (NC State)) kept things rolling at 125 pounds with a clinical win to open the dual with the Bulls. Noto used a first period takedown to take a 2-1 advantage into the second stanza. The Empire State native used an escape in the second period to extend his lead to 3-1 heading into the final frame.

Noto, the 27th-ranked wrestler at 125 pounds, added an additional takedown in the third period and used a riding time advantage to roll to a 6-2 victory, giving Lock Haven a 3-0 advantage after the opening bout of the match.

Ben Barton (Louisville, Ky./Trinity (Campbell)) got the Bald Eagles another win with a convincing 6-1 decision victory at 157.

The Bald Eagles wrapped up the first dual of the day with a pair of thrilling victories at 197 and 285.

At 197 pounds, Parker McClellan (Altoona, Pa./Altoona) stayed on track with a 3-1 sudden victory triumph over Buffalo’s Sam Mitchell. Following a scoreless opening five minutes, McClellan earned a point via stalling to take the lead. The matchup went to overtime when Mitchell earned a riding time point for riding McClellan out in the second period.

In the extra stanza, McClellan went low on a single leg before elevating his position and scoring the takedown to earn a thrilling 3-1 victory.

Isaac Reid (Saltsburg, Pa./Kiski) made his Lock Haven season debut at 285 pounds and came away with an 8-4 win over Toby Cahill. Reid controlled the action throughout, attaining a large riding time advantage and using three takedowns to roll to his first victory of the year.

Against Bucknell in the final dual of the day, the Bald Eagles came up just short in a 21-15 loss to the host Bison.

Noto used a pair of first-period takedowns to take a 4-2 advantage into the second frame at 125 pounds to grab his second win. In the second period, Noto added an escape point and a takedown to push the lead to 7-2 before using a takedown and putting Brandon Seidman to his back to earn the fall, his fourth of the year, putting the Bald Eagles out in front 6-0. The victory for Noto was his 14th in a row and team-leading 17th of the year.

Nick Stonecheck (Alpharetta, Ga./Buford) used a pair of quick takedowns and a second-period escape to earn a hard-fought 5-3 victory at 141 pounds. Stonecheck fought off a challenge by Levitt and the Bison bench in the second-period before turning in the escape point to pick up his seventh victory of the year.

Barton joined Noto with two wins on the day by earning a convincing victory at 157 pounds. The Louisville, Ky. native used a pair of takedowns, and an escape to roll to a 5-1 victory. Lock Haven owned a 12-7 lead in the dual following Barton’s victory.

Reid wrapped up the afternoon with a major decision victory at 285 pounds. The Saltsburg, Pa. native used three takedowns, three near-fall points, an escape and a riding time bonus point to cruise to an 11-2 win, earning his second victory of the day.
