Nittany Lion wrestlers head to Penn on Friday

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA — The Penn State Nittany Lions (3-0, 0-0 B1G), ranked No. 2 in InterMat’s tournament power index (TPI), travel to Philadelphia to battle the Penn Quakers on Friday, Dec. 3. The dual begins at 7 p.m. in The Palestra. Two days later, Penn State hosts Lehigh in Rec Hall on Sunday, Dec. 5, at 2 p.m.

Penn State will be wrestling for the first time since a 32-7 victory over Army West Point on Nov. 18. The Nittany Lions carry a 3-0 record into the weekend’s action. Sophomore Baylor Shunk is sporting a 2-1 mark at 125 while Brandon Meredith, who moved up to 141 against Army, is 0-1. Senior Roman Bravo-Young is ranked No. 1 at 133 and is 3-0 on the year while Nick Lee is ranked No. 1 at 141 and is 1-0. Sophomore Beau Bartlett is ranked No. 20 at 149 and has a 3-0 record. Sophomore Terrell Barraclough is 0-1 at 157 for the Nittany Lions.

Junior Creighton Edsell has a 3-0 record at 165 and is ranked No. 32 by InterMat. Sophomore Carter Starocci is 3-0 at 174 and ranked No. 1 nationally while junior Aaron Brooks is 3-0 at 184 and ranked No. 1 as well. Junior Max Dean is 3-0 at 197 and is ranked No. 4 in the nation while sophomore Greg Kerkvliet is 3-0 at 285 and ranked No.4 as well.

Penn enters the week with an 0-0 dual meet record having competed in two tournaments to date. Sophomore Michael Colaiocco is 7-0 at 133 and ranked No. 12 while junior Carmen Ferrante is 5-2 at 141 and ranked No. 28. Junior Anthony Artalona is ranked No. 23 at 149 with an 0-0 mark while sophomore Lucas Revano is 6-2 at 165 and ranked No. 33. Freshman Nick Incontrera is 6-1 at 174 and ranked No. 21. The Nittany Lions lead the all-time series with the Quakers 22-3, including the last meeting a 33-7 victory on Dec. 8, 2019, in Rec Hall. Penn State lost the last meeting at Penn, a 20-13 defeat on Jan. 20, 2009.

Lehigh carries a 2-1 record into the weekend’s action. The Mountain Hawks are at Lock Haven on Saturday, Dec. 4, a day before invading Rec Hall. Junior Jaret Lane sports a 5-0 mark at 125 and is ranked No. 14 nationally. Freshman Malyke Hines is 4-2 and ranked No. 22. Junior Josh Humphreys is ranked No. 10 at 157 with a 3-1 mark while sophomore Brian Meyer is 5-1 at 165 and ranked No. 27. Senior Jordan Wood is 5-0 at 285 and ranked No. 10. Penn State leads the all-time series with Lehigh 71-34-3, including ten straight. Penn State won the last meeting, a 23-10 victory at Lehigh on Dec. 6, 2019. The Lions won the last Rec Hall battle, 42-0, on Dec. 2, 2018.

Penn State will take part in the Collegiate Wrestling Duals, a pooled event in Niceville, Fla., on Dec. 20-21. Penn State will meet Northern Iowa at 11 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 20, and Cornell at 1 p.m. on the same day. The Nittany Lions will close out the event with one dual on Tuesday, opponent and time to be determined.
