Words of Grace – Oct. 2, 2014

WordsOfGraceIt is written of Abraham that he was sent by God to find “a place which he should afterwards receive for an inheritance” (Hebrews 11:8). He went, not knowing where he was going, to look for the land of promise” (v. 9).

Abraham found the Promised Land, but he longed for something more. “For he looked for a city which has foundations, whose builder and maker is God” (v. 10). “He has prepared for them a city” (v. 16).

Ecclesiastes 10:15 describes a foolish man who has become weary in all his labor because he doesn’t not know how to get to the city. The point of this proverb is that if a fool can’t find his way here on earth, how could he ever find his way to heaven?

It was said of Albert Einstein that he was not only very intelligent, but also very absent-minded. There’s a story of how he once lost his train ticket. The conductor said, “Mr. Einstein, I know you. I know you had a ticket.”

As he walked away, he noticed that Einstein continued to look for his ticket. The conductor again said, “It’s all right. You don’t need a ticket. I know you.”

Albert Einstein replied, “I know you know me. I also know me, but I don’t know where I am going.”

Helen Lemmel asks: “O soul, are you weary and troubled? No light in the darkness you see? There’s light for a look at the Savior, and life more abundant and free!”

To those who have grown weary looking for the way to the city, she says: “Turn your eyes upon Jesus.”
