Wildcats’ Lindsay claims District 6 tennis title

ALTOONA, PA – Central Mountain freshman tennis player David Lindsay on Wednesday took the District 6 AAA tennis title, the first ever won in singles by a Keystone Central School District player.

Lindsay, the top seed, continued his breakout freshman year with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over #2 seed Nathan Barton of Hollidaysburg. He had won two matches on Tuesday to advance to the final at the district tournament held at the Mansion Park courts in Altoona. In the quarterfinals he downed Alex Norris of Williamsport, 6-0, 6-0 and in the semifinals defeated Altoona’s Nick Schimminger, 6-0, 6-0.

Lindsay was virtually untouchable all season, not losing a set. In fact, he only lost one game, winning 180 and losing but one. He is 15-0 for his overall record. Lindsay will advance to Hershey for the PIAA championships on Friday, May 28; his first match will be with the District 3 runner-up.

According to Wildcat head coach Pete Wert, Keystone Central has never had an individual winner.  He said former Central Mountain coach Ken Gibson made the finals three times for Lock Haven High School but lost to the same person all three years; other than that nobody else have even made the finals in singles.

Coach Wert was effusive in his praise for Lindsay’s performance: “David has been solid all year and he prepares harder than any other player that I have had.  He has been a model student/athlete and has helped make the other kids on the team better players.  He has earned all the accolades through his and his family’s hard work.  I look forward to whatever the state championships bring.”
