LOCK HAVEN – The Salvation Army has some impressive new kitchen equipment, thanks to an endowment from Lee Phillips and his late wife Madeline.

Lee Phillips and Robert Lugg, the latter representing the Clinton County Community Foundation, were at the Citadel on E. Church St. last week as work was completed on installation of a new cooking range and convection oven; the new equipment was purchased with an $8,449 award from the foundation, made possible with a charitable endowment of $176,000 from the Phillips to the foundation.

Currently the Salvation Army serves over 350 “good will” meals a week.

Lugg, foundation president, said the Salvation Army is one of eight community groups to benefit from the kindness of the Phillips, the others St. Paul’s Lutheran Church; the Woolrich, Dunnstown and Nittany Valley Fire Companies; the Clinton County United Way; the Clinton County SPCA; and the Ross Library.

Lugg called the bequest “a lasting legacy” and “highlights the type of good the Phillips endowment will do.”

The Citadel kitchen was also recently augmented by a $5,000 grant from the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank towards two new refrigerator units.

And the Lock Haven Rotary Club has again funded a backpack project for distribution through the Salvation Army. A release said the local Rotary Club and the Salvation Army have partnered for the past three years so as to supply and pack backpacks for at risk youth.

This year $1,000 was provided to fund 100 backpacks.

Salvation Army Maj. Marie Harris said the backpacks and contents eliminate the embarrassment of not having the same supplies that other children have and raises the recipients’ self-esteem by not singling them out.

“Having the backpacks will enhance their learning experience as they will have the tools needed for their classes.”

The Salvation Army and the Lock Haven Rotary thanked a number of participants to make the project a reality: Northwest Savings Bank, One Main Financial, Rote United Methodist Church, McElhattan United Methodist Church, Arby’s, Bald Eagle and Nittany Valley Kiwanis, Lock Haven Kiwanis, Clinton County Fire Chiefs Association, Brewery Hollow Outsiders, Horizon Federal Credit Union and the Knights of Columbus.
