Williamsport Loses Commercial Air Service for a Month in October
WILLIAMSPORT, PA – American Airlines has announced it will be suspending its flights from the Williamsport Regional Airport for one month, effective in early October. The decision means the airport at Montoursville will be without commercial flights for the first time in memory.
The airline said its decision was the “result of low demand and the expiration of the air service requirements” associated with the CARES Act. An airline release said, “For now, these changes are only in place for the October schedule period, which runs through Nov. 3.”
The airline announced cancellation of over 700 flights in 15 cities overall. The announcement came just days after American had begun service from Williamsport to Charlotte, NC. The airport had marked the first flight to Charlotte with a water cannon display. Customers will be contacted, an airport spokesman said, about the cancellation of flights lost during the month-long suspension.
The Williamsport airport had seen its flights cut to one a day in February of this year. The airport subsequently received better than $19 million in CARES funding and had launched an extensive advertising campaign touting its flights to Charlotte.
