It’s Tim again …

I won’t be one bit surprised if I read someday that Chapman Township Supervisor Tim Horner is heading for the governorship. The man is and has chaired been president of numerous organizations. As I noted in last week’s column Tim was recently elected president of the Pennsylvania State Association of Township Supervisors organization, and was featured on the cover of the Pennsylvania Township News magazine. I learned this week that he has been re-elected president of the Sinnemahoning Sportsman’s Club.

It’s a Ukelin kind of day …

While I’m talking about Tim Horner, I might add Tim is into antiques and strange and unusual objects. He recently came back from a yard sale adventure with an unusual musical instrument, a 1924 ukelin. The ukelin, according to Wikapedia is a bowed psaltery with zither strings made popular in the 1920’s. It is meant to be a combination of the violin and the Hawaiian ukelele. Recently he took the ukelin and the music book that came with it along to his dinner meeting at the Sportsman’s with his buddies. It was an interesting sight to see. George Crighton who is taking violin lessons pulled out the bow and began trying his skills at the ukelin. Gary Eberhard read the directions and studied the songs in the book, songs from the 1920s. He must have also looked up the ukelin on his phone – he just talks into it and all kinds of information appears on the screen.

Tim and musician Bud Hallberg were comparing the older instruments such as the ukelin with modern stringed instruments. From an observer’s perspective it almost looked like a scene from a Seinfield episode.

Camp Discovery …

Seven local women thoroughly enjoyed a week-long seminar of sorts, Camp Discovery, led by Renovo native Colleen Smith Maher. This was the second year Colleen brought the camp to Renovo. It is open to women whose lives have had some impact from cancer, either themselves or their family members or friends. That mean’s nearly every woman, and man too if you think about it. There’s hardly anyone who doesn’t have a family member, relative or friend who hasn’t dealt with cancer in some way or other. The camp was held at Yesterday’s Restaurant and each day the restaurant staff prepared a morning brunch and a delicious lunch. Participants did not dwell on cancer. Instead they made things, did crafts and each day performed an hour or more of dance. Each day was different and every participant said she’s hoping there will be another camp week next year.

Snug to play for WCCRA fundraiser …

Clinton County Commissioner Joel Long and his band, SNUG, will present a fundraiser dance to benefit Western Clinton County Recreation Authority (the recreation center in Renovo) on

Friday, Sept. 12 at the Railhouse Lounge in Yesterday’s. The doors open at 9 p.m. The show begins at 10 p.m. Admission is $5 at the door and all proceeds benefit WCCRA.

Commissioner Long attends most of the recreation center board of director’s meetings. Greg Lucabaugh, an owner of Yesterdays serves on the center’s board and both men devote much time and energy to the center.

The center is one of Renovo’s gems. It offers a beautiful swimming pool, a fitness room, a gymnasium, weight room and programs through the school year. All this and at very reasonable rates either individually or by family memberships. Twice a year, membership specials are run, September (Coming up soon) and again in March. For more information call the center from 9 a.m. to noon on weekdays (570-923-0433). Or stop in and tour the facility.

Childhood playmates …

Theresa Lane of Renovo and Pat O’Connor, formerly of Renovo both remembered the Ginther family when they lived in Renovo years ago. Both in fact said they were childhood friends with Kathy Ginther, twin sister of Michael Ginther who lives in California these days. Mike and several relatives from Torrence, CA were recently visiting in this area and photographed at the front door of St. Joseph’s church. When the photo of them appeared in The Record, Theresa and Pat both commented it was good Seeing Michael’s photo. They also wonder where Kathy lives.
