Wildcats Finish Third at Rugged Dallastown Duals
DALLASTOWN – Central Mountain wrestling coach Biff Walizer nailed it when he said, “We’re a better team leaving here than when we got here.” His comment came Saturday night after the Wildcats finished in third place in a formidable eight-team field at the 2020 Dallastown Duals.
The Wildcats went 2-1 on the day, opening with a 37-23 win over Penn Manor (8-2), dropping a 36-27 tussle with state-ranked Cumberland Valley (7-3), and closing with a 46-27 win over Emmaus (11-3).
(Editor’s Note – Story Update: Coach Walizer reported Sunday that middleweight wrestler Zach Miller is “home and okay.” Miller had required medical attention after hitting the mat hard in his match against Emmaus and had to injury default).
After a 37-18 loss to Mifflin County two nights earlier, Walizer said he was pleased with what he saw from his young team (only one senior in the starting lineup). “Coming in, we knew we’d face three tough matches, which we did,” he told therecord-online, adding, “Overall it was a good experience; we needed a bounce-back” after the loss to Mifflin County.
The tightest dual was with Cumberland Valley, a back-and-forth affair. In a dual that started at 113 pounds, the Wildcats pulled to within 12 points, the deficit at 33-21 after Gage Sutliff picked up a major decision at 220 pounds. Heavyweight Cyrus McCarl was next up and put Cumberland Valley’s Connor Mundis on his back in the first period but did not get the pin call, opening up an early 5-0 lead. As Walizer noted, had the pin been recorded, the bouts would have ended up 7-7 and the score 33-33, this after Gino Serafini picked up a first period fall in the final bout. But McCarl ended up losing 8-5, socked with four stalling points, much to the chagrin of the Wildcat coaching staff. (Central Mountain was called for a remarkable 10 stalling points in the dual, many more than they surrender in a season; they gave up one stalling point total in the other two dual meets).
Knocked into the third place match, Central Mountain trailed Emmaus 27-22 with five bouts remaining. The Wildcats swept all five to claim third, starting with Sutliff’s 4-2 overtime win at 195, Nik Miller with a first period fall at 220, McCarl with a 2-0 decision win, Serafini with a second period fall and Derek Keen with a second period fall.
Sutliff, Serafini and Taylor Weaver all went 3-0 on the day, Weaver with three falls. Multiple others went 2-1 in a strong team effort showing.
Dallastown took the senior high crown with a 39-38 win over Cumberland Valley.
The Wildcats, now 7-2, return home Tuesday, Jan. 14 to host State College (6-2). The Central Mountain junior high team swept the Dallastown junior high tourney. Wins came over Susquehannock, 77-9; Dallastown, 45-31; and Cumberland Valley, 40-33.
