City Beach Could Open Next Monday

LOCK HAVEN – The City of Lock Haven website says the city beach will be open from Monday, June 17 to August 18.
That planned opening may or may not happen next Monday, depending on the results of water quality samples taken recently.

The free swimming in the Susquehanna River was lost for virtually all of the 2018 season because of high water bacteria readings.

Officials never did find the source of the problem. The beach had opened briefly in June of last year but the bacteria counts never did come down to acceptable levels.

While swimmers are hoping the water will be clean enough for a go-ahead, the city also is planning the installation of a boat docking area this summer. City manager Greg Wilson told therecord-online that footers for the boat dock will be going in, HUC Inc. the contractor. First, he said, a small coffer dam has to be installed to keep the water away while concrete is poured.

Wilson said after the footers cure, and river level permitting, the dock can be installed. Like the floating stage, Wilson said, the dock is reliant on the river level; “if the water’s too high, it will need to be removed until the river level falls.” The boat docking area will be just downriver from the Veterans Bridge, near the floating stage.

The first summer concert at the Corman Amphitheater is scheduled for this Sunday, June 16, the Uptown Music Collective from Williamsport.
