Dallastown Edges Wildcats, 29-28 for Dual Tourney Crown

DALLASTOWN – The Central Mountain wrestling team suffered a rare regular season loss Saturday night, but it was not for lack of effort. The visiting Wildcats clawed with the host Dallastown Wildcats through 14 weights before the home team earned a 29-28 criteria victory.

Both squads came into the Dallastown Duals final undefeated, Central Mountain at 8-0 and Dallastown at 11-0. The two teams split the 14 bouts at seven apiece and each put up 28 on the scoreboard so the contest went to criteria and the home team, on the strength of a two to one edge in falls, was the winner.

Wildcat coach Biff Walizer said he was “not disappointed at all” with his team’s showing, stating that “the fight was there…two quality teams staged a match that came down to criteria.”

The championship dual went back and forth. The contest started at 120 pounds and the Wildcats opened a 10-0 lead off a fall from Johnny Shreffler and a major from Dalton Bechdel. After a Dallastown win at 132, Cody Coleman picked up an overtime victory and the ‘Cats had a 13-4 lead, their largest of the night. Dallastown picked up what proved to be two crucial first period falls over the next three bouts, the Wildcats only win in that stretch a major from Alonzo Henry; after 160 pounds, it was 17-16 Central Mountain.

But Dallastown’s strength was in its upper weights as the home team took four of the next five weights with regular decisions to open a 28-20 lead with two bouts to go; the lone Wildcat winner in that stretch was Gage Sutliff with a regular decision.

Down by 8, the Wildcats’ freshmen pheenoms made a late run. Derek Keen at 106 picked up a 13-4 major, putting the team score at 28-24 Dallastown with but one bout to go. Fellow freshman Taylor Weaver, whose appearance was questionable because of an upper body injury, took to the mat and did everything but pick up a pin. He had his Dallastown opponent on his back as the final buzzer sounded but had to settle for a 10-1 major, knotting the score at 28-28. A quick check of the rule book showed the two-one pin edge for Dallastown earned them the criteria victory, 29-28, and the title.

Central Mountain had the more difficult draw to get to the finals. Their semifinal, 29-24 win over Cumberland Valley also came down to the wire. The Wildcats trailed the Rams, 24-12 with three bouts to go but got a fall from Tanner Riggle and a forfeit awarded to Jake Edwards to make it 24-23, Cumberland Valley with only the 106 pound bout remaining. Again Keen came through; he gave up the initial takedown but reversed and cradled his opponent for a first period fall and the Wildcat win. That match saw each team win seven bouts apiece but bonus points at the final three weights brought CM from behind for the win.

Earlier Central Mountain had downed York Suburban by a 67-9 score to go 2-1 on the day. Three Wildcat wrestlers went 3-0: Keen (18-5), Bechdel (20-5) and Cody Coleman (15-7). The Wildcat junior high stayed undefeated, breezing to the title. Their wins came over Cocalico, 81-17; Emmaus, 60-24; and Cumberland Valley, 56-23.

The Wildcat varsity will be back in action at State College Tuesday, Jan 15, returning home for a dual with Williamsport on Thursday, Jan. 17.
