JFK would love this …

Some of the older among you may remember when President John F. Kennedy reminded us to ask not what our country can do for us, but what we could do for our country. Some community minded Western Clinton County residents have formed an “Adopt A Pothole” project and are doing what they can do to fix up the pot holes in the borough streets. Prompted by the aftermath of Gary Stewart’s tragic death, citizens and businesses gathered yesterday (Wednesday) morning to fill in some of the pot holes. More news about that coming next week.

Lindy sisters wow the audience …

The California based Lindy Sisters, who were in the area for the annual Lock Haven Fly In, performed their repertoire of 1940s songs for Renovo residents at First Methodist Church last Wednesday evening. A large crowd enjoyed the show – it was excellent – and the refreshment s afterward. The show was sponsored by the Renovo Women’s Club.

Wayne Short’s new book …

The History of Renovo Pennsylvania 1951-1975 is at the printers now and will be on sale July 7. Six years in the making, this third history of Renovo may prove to be the most read and most popular because it spans the lifetime of many of today’s area residents. The new tome contains 744 pages and more than 200 pictures.

Author and publisher Wayne Short said he spent the past six years researching material and gathering the photos for this book.

He’s previously published The History of Renovo, Pennsylvania 1866 – 1925 and The History of Renovo, Pennsylvania 1926 – 1950.

A rite of passage …

It’s funny, but if you talk to a group of people who grew up in the 1950s and 1960s, it doesn’t matter where they grew up in the United States; you can almost bet on it that someone among them either passed papers or set pins in a bowling alley. Oh, and there’s also a good chance someone may have also sold Cloverine salve to earn points for prizes.

Renovo native Steven Kurutz who writes for the New York Times, recently wrote an article about his days as a pin setter at the Renovo Bowling lanes in Yesterday’s. A few weeks ago when JoNell her Moore Knisely and her sister Lorraine and brother Darrell all were pin setters at the YMCA in Renovo when they were kids. Personally, I didn’t pass papers or set pins, but I sold the salve for prizes. And, my husband both passed papers and set pins at the Christiana Bowling Lanes. I’m wondering if Cloverine is still being sold and if it is out there for kids to sell?
