LHU Wrestlers Downed by UVA, Oklahoma on Day 1 of Virginia Duals
HAMPTON, Va. – The No. 14 Lock Haven University wrestling team opened the 2019 Virginia Duals with a pair of losses Friday. The Bald Eagles fell to Virginia 32-12, before being downed by Oklahoma, 23-12.
Leading the way for Lock Haven was fourth-ranked Chance Marsteller (New Park, Pa./Kennard-Dale), who went 2-0 at 165 pounds.
The two dual losses moved Lock Haven back to .500 (2-2) on the season in dual action. Saturday, on Day 2 of the Virginia Duals Tournament, LHU will compete in the seventh-place match.
The Bald Eagles opened the day with a loss to a tough Virginia side that featured three nationally-ranked wrestlers. With Lock Haven in a 9-0 hole after two bouts, Kyle Shoop (Boiling Springs, Pa./Boiling Springs) put LHU on the board in a big way with an upset-win at 141. Shoop turned in a tremendous effort that led to a dominating 9-4 decision over No. 16 Sam Krivus.
Marsteller took down Virginia’s Cam Coy, 4-3 (TB-1) and Jared Siegrist (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central) rounded out the Lock Haven winners vs. UVA with a pin. Siegrist (174) pinned Robert Patrick at the 4:52 mark.
Lock Haven closed Day 1 in Hampton, Virginia with a loss to Oklahoma, 23-12. The Bald Eagles won three bouts including a win for Marsteller, as well as Luke Werner (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) and Austin Bell (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon).
Werner put Lock Haven on the board quickly with a win by injury default at 125. Werner was leading when the bout was called, and the victory pushed LHU to an early 6-0 lead.
The Sooners posted a win at 133, and at 141, No. 8 Dom Demas edged out Shoop, 5-2 to tie the dual at 6-6.
Marsteller stopped the Oklahoma run with a solid 6-1 victory at 165 over Hayden Hansen.
Bell answered the call and jumped up to 184, and downed Kayne MacCallum, 3-2, thanks to a strong finish in the third.
The Bald Eagles will return to action Saturday in the seventh-place match at the 2019 Virginia Duals. Lock Haven will take on winner of a Friday match between Chattanooga and Kent State. The Friday LHU line-up was without heavyweight starter Thomas Haines who has been battling injuries.
