Central Mountain Moves to 5-0 with 67-9 Win over Shamokin

BALD EAGLE TOWNSHIP – A young Shamokin team was game but overmatched as Central Mountain piled up a 67-9 win over the Indians in Tuesday night wrestling action at the Wildcat gym.

The victory moved the Wildcats to 5-0 as the pace picks up this month, including a Thursday home meet with Shikellamy (1-1) and a 3-dual meet tourney in Dallastown Saturday, Jan. 12.

Shamokin, now 2-3, had nine freshmen on its roster and was no match for the talented ‘Cats. CM jumped to a 61-0 lead before the Indians hit the scoreboard, the visitors getting their lone two wins from promising freshmen Maximus Madden and Dean Backus.

But before that, Central Mountain plowed through. The dual started at 182 pounds and Gage Sutliff (7-8) picked up the first of six Wildcat pins. Next up Nick Miller received a forfeit at 195 pounds. Tanner Riggle (16-5) earned a pin, as did heavyweight Jake Edwards, now 15-3.

That turned the lineup over and the onslaught continued: Derek Keen (14-5) with a forfeit, Taylor Weaver (14-5) with a fall and Johnny Shreffler (14-3) with a pin. Then it was Dalton Bechdel (16-5) with a forfeit, Kayden Busey (8-6) with a decision, Cody Coleman (12-6) a major and Lane Porter (10-5) with a pin.

Shamokin got on the board when Madden (23-3) hit a headlock with seconds remaining to pull out a 3-2 win over Wildcat Alonzo Henry (13-7). Caleb Porter (9-8) picked up Central Mountain’s fourth of four forfeits at 160 pounds and in the final bout, at 170 pounds, CM’s Austin Confer (6-8) went 2-2 in regulation before Backus (10-3) caught him and pinned him in overtime, setting the final at 67-9. The Wildcats are averaging better than 61 points per dual meet so far, but the schedule will toughen as January moves along.

The Wildcats will be challenged by two undefeated teams at Dallastown, the host squad (7-0) and Cumberland Valley (6-0). Central Mountain will open at 12:30 p.m. Saturday with York Suburban (10-6). Additional rounds are set for 330 p.m. and 5 p.m.

The Central Mountain Junior High stayed undefeated with a 93-0 win. That squad will be competing in the Dallastown tourney junior high division on Saturday.
