Shik Roughs Up Lady ‘Cats, 58-29

BALD EAGLE TOWNSHIP – It was another tough outing for the Lady Wildcat basketball team as they fell to visiting Shikellamy, 58-29.

Central Mountain kept pace with the Lady Braves in the early going with the score knotted at 10-all at the end of the first quarter. Then Shik settled into a slow tempo ball control offense taking their time to complete high percentage shots. That change in strategy along with the Lady ‘Cats struggling to get their shots to drop gave Shikellamy a 21-4 effort in the second quarter for a 31-14 halftime lead.

After the break, CM came out and played with a bit more intensity fueled by back-to-back 3-pointers from Avery Baker to get things rolling. The Lady Wildcats kept pace with Shikellamy in the third quarter 13-all with the Lady Braves up 44-27.

In the fourth quarter someone put a lid on the CM bucket again as they struggled to get their shots to drop only managing 2 points in the final 8 minutes. Conversely, Shik kept up their effort to score 14 more points inn the fourth quarter to seal the 58-29 win.

“I give them (Shik) credit, they shot the ball really well tonight,” Baker said of CM’s opponent, “We talked at halftime that we were getting beat down low and we decided to come out with some pressure in the second half and that opened some things up for us.”

Even though the game was one-sided, CM head coach, Scott Baker used the situation as an opportunity as a teachable moment for several of his younger players. With a few players out due to injury and illness, Baker dressed his entire remaining roster for the game, entering several JV players into the lineup for some valuable varsity experience.

“We’re a little short on bodies right now. One of the things we have to do is create some depth,” Baker explained, “We and do that and we want to play like that. We saw some good things tonight. Just getting those younger players on the floor tonight is a step in the right direction to solve our depth problem.”

Quinlynn McCann led the Lady ‘Cats with 13 points followed by Avery Baker with 11. Mia Kopysciansky scored 4 points while Morgan Wetzlel had a free throw to her credit.

The lady Wildcats are now 0-7 on the season, 0-4 in the PHAC.

Next up for Central Mountain is a home game with Tyrone on Monday, Jan. 7, 2019.
