Central Mountain in First Place after Day 1 at Buckskin Holiday Classic
LANCASTER – It was an up-and-down day for Central Mountain at the Buckskin Holiday Classic at Conestoga Valley High School. After a great first round and a blazing four falls in as many matches of the quarterfinal round, the field tightened and the Wildcats will have nine wrestlers battling back in the lower brackets tomorrow. When the smoke cleared, the Wildcats are at the top of the leader board in the team standings.
Derek Keen (106), Taylor Weaver (113), Johnny Shreffler (120) and Dalton Bechdel (126) will all advance to the semi-finals on Saturday and they did it with style with all recording falls in their quarter final matches.
After that, Central Mountain had a tougher go of it in the rest of the round with five more wrestlers knocked out of the championship bracket. Cody Coleman (138), Lane Porter (145), Austin Confer (170), Tanner Riggle (220) and Jacob Edwards (285) joined Alonzo Henry (152), Caleb Porter (160), Gage Sutliff (182) and Nikolas Miller (195) in the wrestle backs. Kayden Busey (132) has been eliminated from the tournament.
In the fourth round of consolations, Coleman and Edwards picked up falls while Riggle earned a major decision along with decisions for Henry and Miller to boost the Wildcat’s efforts.
Final team standings after Day 1 has Central Mountain out in front with 105.0 points followed by with New Oxford 99.0, Central Dauphin is third with 95.5, the hosts, Conestoga Valley in fourth place, tied with Father Judge at 93.0. Owen J. Roberts rounds out the top five with 90.0. Bellefonte is tenth with 71.5, Philipsburg-Osceola, 11th with 71.0, Shikellamy 14th with 64.0 and Jersey Shore is 26th with 23.0.
The second day of wrestling will begin tomorrow, Saturday, Dec. 29, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. with the semi-final round along with consolation rounds, 4 and 5. The championship and consolation finals are slated for 2 p.m.
