Borowicz Ends Long Democratic Run in 76th State House District
LOCK HAVEN— You have to go back to 1969 to find the last time the state House 76th district was represented by a Republican. It was the late W. Max Bossert who finished his time in Harrisburg in 1970. Democrat Russ Letterman of Milesburg took over the seat in 1971 and served until his death in 1990. Democrat Mike Hanna was elected in 1991 and will finish his fourteenth term at the end of this year.
But next year a Republican will be representing residents of Clinton County and the eastern portion of Centre. Stephanie Borowicz was successful Tuesday night, trailing early but then opening up and sustaining a lead as more results came in. The unofficial election night count between the two counties was 10,125 for Borowicz and 8,720 for her opponent, Mike Hanna, Jr., the son of the incumbent representative. Clinton County Commissioner Jeff Snyder said 434 absentee ballots and an unspecified number of provisional ballots had to be counted; those results are not expected to affect the outcome.
In Clinton County the margin was Borowicz, 6,337 and Hanna, 5,691. She ran particularly well in the county’s rural areas and Hanna was unable to overcome a nearly 2,000 Republican registration edge. Borowicz’s Clinton County total was less than any of the three other Republicans on the county ballot but more than enough to help ensure her win.
Lou Barletta, GOP candidate for the U.S. Senate, received 6,645 county votes to Bob Casey’s 5,020; Casey won another term as Pennsylvania senator. Scott Wagner had 6,516 county votes to Gov. Tom Wolf’s 5,292 as Wolf won a second term. Congressman Tom Marino received 7,484 votes in the new 12th district, compared to Democrat Marc Friedenberg’s 4,441; Marino easily winning re-election.
Borowicz was not immediately available for comment after her win. Hanna said his team had run what they thought was an appropriate campaign and said he had “no regrets.”
