Recreational tourism at its best …

Recreational tourism is often discussed as a means to boost economy in Western Clinton County. In recent years there’s little doubt that this area can provide optimal outdoor activity opportunities. The Hyner Challenge – a 17 mile to 25 mile race on a rugged trail is an example. The event is so popular; the organizers have had to limit the number of runners and hikers to 1,200.

The Bucktail Medical Center Relay for Life and Central Mountain ATV Club has come up with an ATV ride event that’s quickly gaining in popularity. This year was the fourth annual ride and 182 all terrain vehicles were registered. I think there were between 45 and 50 ATV’s participating the first year the ride was held. The money raised goes to Clinton County’s American Cancer Society Relay for Life event.

Among the volunteers helping with event were Rich Wykoff from the ATV club and president of the Heritage Park Committee, (the ride starting and ending point is Heritage Park in the Renovo Industrial Park) BMC employees and Orpha King who serving as interim administrator at the medical center until a permanent administrator is hired.
This year more vendors were at the event that previously.

The event started at Heritage Park where the food was cooked and served and vendors of all terrain vehicles and equipment were on hand. Tom Tarantella and son Tom and a crew of volunteers cooked chicken on the grill and hospital employees and friends provided salads, desserts and drinks, etc. for the ATV rid participants. The ride covers more than 50 miles of scenic beauty in Western Clinton County. The ride was hosted and organized by the BMC Relay for Life Team and the Central Mountain ATV Club.

Dave and Carla Flack provided showers and a hand washing station.

Prowl the Sproul …

The annual Prowl the Sproul hosted by Western Clinton Sportsman’s Association is set for July 18, 19 and 20 this year. It also draws many people to the area. The Prowl offers participants a variety of hikes of various lengths and endurance levels.

Women’s Cancer Camp …

A “camp” for women who have dealt with or are dealing with cancer and related issues will be held in Renovo at Yesterday’s on Third Street the week of July 28th this year (9 a.m. to 1 p.m. daily. The camp is FREE. It is a project of the former Colleen Smith, daughter of Bert and Lavonne Smith.

Rumor has it …

Rumor has it, not a clue if it’s true, but some are saying the good folks of Leidy Township, Cross Forks, Hammersley Fork, and other locations in that area will have cell phone service before winter. Not promising anything folks, as mentioned, it is a rumor that’s out there.

And the good news is …

The good news for women in the Loganton and Renovo areas is that the Strong women class will return to Bucktail Medical Center in the Fall. At Renovo, the instructors will be Joyce Stewart and Ellen Anderson, who earlier this spring went to Lancaster for training to teach the class.

Tim wants the recipe for Binder’s Beer …
Chapman Township Supervisors’ Chairman Tim Horner is looking for the recipe for Binder’s Beer. By coincidence, Tim has the original first air mail letter mailed from Renovo. And we happen to know that a member of the Binder family – that first air mail letter was sent by Luke Binder – is interested in that letter. Mmm, maybe a trade is in order. Come to think of it, Tim or somebody has mentioned that a new batch of the brew in a micro brewery could be a fund raiser idea.
