Hosley, Gugino Pace Loggerheads with Record Setting Effort
LOCK HAVEN – The Lock Haven YMCA Loggerheads began their summer swim season in June. The swim team is open to children ages 5-18.
The team practices every day at Lock Haven University Zimmerli Pool or at the Lock Haven Area YMCA. The Greater Susquehanna Valley Swim League has thirteen teams in the League. The team swims a total of six meets and championships. They wrapped up the season with Championships on July 27-28 at LHU.
During meets/championships the swimmers swam a total of 4 events including relays. The swimmers’ goal is to beat their best time. This season we had two young swimmers do just that.
When the season started Gabriella Hosley had a time that she wanted to break. She stayed focused; she was committed to the team and worked very hard on her goal. That paid off during the Championship meet on Saturday. She kept her mind set on the Team/League Record in the 8 and Under 25 breaststroke. The time she wanted to beat was 20.09 which was the team record held by Lilyann Gugino since 2015. The League Record is 19.34.
This is where team spirit, camaraderie and compassion came into play. When Gabriella finished her swim, she asked for her time (which is not official until it goes thru the scoring table). It was 19.63. She was ecstatic. While she knew it wasn’t the league record, she also knew that she swam her best time of the summer and she got the team record.
Lilyann was right there to congratulate her on her swim and the new team record. Lilyann said, “That’s what records are for, they are to be broken by your teammates!” Gabriella also holds the team record for the 8 and Under 25 Backstroke with a time of 18.63. Two of the Top 5 times are from 1974 and 1994. It really shows what hard work and dedication can do for these young swimmers.
Lilyann knows that hard work and dedication are important in any sport. Lilyann has been both a swimmer and gymnast for many years. She often split her time between both sports. Lilyann excelled at both but she knew that in order to compete at a higher level she would have to make a difficult choice: A choice between two competitive sports that she loved. She devoted her summer to swimming. She stayed committed, practiced daily and worked hard.
That paid off on Saturday afternoon. Lilyann set the GSVAL League Record in the 12 and under Girls 50 Breaststroke with a time of 33.32.
The excitement was overwhelming. Gabriella stayed after her session was complete to watch Lilyann swim. She wanted to cheer her on to victory just as Lilyann had done for her. Here are two young ladies who set their standards high, worked hard and achieved their goals

The Lock Haven Loggerheads competed with 25 swimmers over the course of two days. The team placed fourth in the GSVAL Swim League. The Loggerheads will enjoy the remainder of the summer before getting into the pool again in the early fall.
