Lady Bulldogs Battle Back for 3-2 Win over Central Mountain
BALD EAGLE TOWNSHIP – It took two weeks and a change of venue, but the second cycle meeting between Central Mountain and Jersey Shore is finally in the books with the Lady Bulldogs pulling off a come-from-behind 3-2 win over the Lady Wildcats.
Back on May 3, the game was called in the top of the fourth inning due to heat rain with the momentum in CM’s favor as they had a 2-1 lead with runners on first and second and only one out. The momentum as well as the weather, changed for today’s completion of the game.
Due to very wet weather the past couple of days, the lady Bulldogs field was deemed unplayable for today’s game. The decision was made to move the game to Central Mountain and the staff did a great job to get the field ready for play. Even though the game would be completed at Central Mountain, Jersey would remain the home team.
Both teams picked up where they left off, Central Mountain’s Alexis Strouse on first, Alyssa Fisher on second and Madalyn Bechdel in the batter’s box.
Bechdel would ground out to the pitcher and Josie Dershem would fly out to center field t end any fourth threat.
Jersey Shore would load the bases with two outs on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning using a walk, a base hit and a hit batsman before a groundout ended the inning with Central Mountain still holding on to their slim 2-1 lead.
In the top of the fifth inning, the Lady Wildcats went down in order. In the bottom of the fifth, ‘Shore made there first move to balance the scales.
McKenna Russell and Brianna Herman had back-to-back singles for the Lady Bulldogs to get things started, then Lexi Schuler laid down a sacrifice bunt to put both runners in scoring position. A sac fly from Alyssa Stover would plate Russell and a RBI double from Aubrey Stetts would score Herman to give ‘Shore a 3-2 lead.
Both defenses held strong the remainder of the game, though the Lady ‘Cats would make one last attempt in the top of the seventh inning when Josie Dershem belted out a two-out single to get on board but the threat would end quickly with a ground out sealing the win for Jersey Shore.
Central Mountain did a good job of putting the bat on the ball today, but their efforts ended up in the hands of the Lady Bulldog defense which stifled any offensive effort. Conversely, ‘Shore had great fortune in finding the gaps to take control on offense.
For today’s segment of the game, Kylie Russell Russell worked the circle for ‘Shore allowing two hits. For CM it was Madison Knepp drew the pitching duties yielding 5 hits and 2 walks in three innings work.
With the win, Jersey Shore moves to 15-2 overall, 8-1 in the PHAC with a makeup game with Shamokin remaining. Central Mountain ends regular season play at 13-5, 8-2 in the PHAC.
Central Mountain will now prepare for the District 6 5A championship game to be played at St. Francis on May 23, 2018 at 2:30 p.m. against the winner of the Hollidaysburg vs DuBois game scheduled for today.
