Carpenter, Slattery Carry LHU Softball to PSAC Tourney Win
QUAKERTOWN. – Pitcher Bekah Slattery (Douglasville, Pa./Daniel Boone) threw a complete-game two-hitter and Casey Carpenter (Spring Brook, Pa./North Pocono) provided the game’s only run with a monster solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning as the Lock Haven University softball team (35-10) opened the 2018 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament Wednesday afternoon with a 1-0 victory over Millersville University (23-19).
Slattery struck out six on the way to her 71-pitch gem and Carpenter provided the game’s biggest fireworks with her home run that cleared the 200 foot center field fence with ease.
Carpenter’s homer broke up what had been a pitcher’s duel until then, as Millersville’s Cassidy Pinchorski was game as well, and allowed just four Lock Haven hits. Pinchorski struck out four.
For the game, Carpenter finished 2 for 2 at the plate.
Slattery quickly got in the groove and threw a 1-2-3 top half of the first. In the bottom of the first, Lock Haven – the home team in today’s game – looked to jump on Millersville quickly and loaded the bases with one out, before Millersville got out of the jam.
Millersville led off the third with a Megan McCurdy double, but she was stranded at third.
Lock Haven got on the board in the sixth with what would prove to be the game’s only run. Carpenter’s home run came with two outs in the bottom of the sixth and at the time was just the third hit of the game for Lock Haven. Slattery closed it out with a strike out, ground out and pop up in the seventh to seal the win.
With the win, Lock Haven advances to Day 2 Thursday action, playing at 3 p.m. against the winner of a Wednesday game between Shippensburg and Seton Hill.
