Lady Bucks Softball Update
by Katie Ditty
FARWELL – Five weeks into the softball season and 12 postponements or cancellations later, the Bucktail Lady Bucks are 0-4. As in years past, Mother Nature continues to be the greatest and most difficult opponent for the team.
Even as this was written, the clouds are looming and the rain is eminent. Squeezing a game in today (Wednesday)was not likely.
As far as the games that have been played, the Lady Bucks have struggled on both sides of the ball. The last two games though have shown major improvements at the plate, according to Coach Lynn Gavlock. “We are making contact with the ball, which we didn’t do well in the first two games.”
Defensively there have been errors and stolen bases against the timid fielders. “We have so many girls in places they have never played because of injuries and illnesses. They are finding it hard to get in the swing of things with such an unpredictable schedule,” added Gavlock.
Senior pitcher Michaela Hills has been throwing well, recording 28 strikeouts so far. That is an average of over one strikeout per inning.
Offensively Abby Ransom is the stronghold of the Lady Bucks, with seven hits and an average of. 583 through four games. Included in that is a double and triple, and there is no sign of her letting up anytime soon.
The battle will continue as nine more games are on the schedule for the remaining two and a half weeks of play. The team does not play at home again until next Wednesday against CMVT at 4:30. In the meantime, they have away games scheduled for Friday, Saturday, and Monday.
