Mayes Announces Candidacy for School Board
MILL HALL – Greg Mayes of Mill Hall has announced his candidacy for the Keystone Central School Board, seeking to represent District II, Mill Hall and Lamar Township.
Mayes is married to Sherry Mayes and has a son Ryan Mayes, a senior at Central Mountain High School. He will be on the November ballot as a Republican candidate in November.
A Lock Haven native, he is a graduate of Lock Haven High School and holds a BS degree in business administration from Columbia Southern University. Mayes spent 23 years living in Delaware while working in Delaware, New Jersey and the Philadelphia area in management as a accountant, controller and comptroller for various companies.
He returned to Clinton County in 2005 and has been manager of the Suburban Water Authority for the past eight years and owner/operator of After Hours Satellite since 1999.
His current community involvement includes: member of the KCSD Task Force; president, Beech Creek Legion Riders; vice-president, Lock Haven Moose Riders; vice-commander, Sons of the Beech Creek American Legion; Suburban Water Authority representative to the Clinton County Economic Partnership.
In his candidacy announcement, Mayes said, “The responsibilities and duties of my employment have given me over 30 years of experience in business management, accounting, benefit administration, budget preparation and negotiating. I spent 11 years as one of three company representatives negotiating a contract with employees who were members of the Teamsters Union. I have been involved in negotiating contracts to provide services to companies such as E.I. DuPont, National Ammonia and Ciba-Geigy.
“In my current position with Suburban Water, I prepare an annual budget, approved by the board of directors, which limits expenditures to the amount of estimated revenue. For the past several years, this budget allows money to be set aside in a reserve account. At Suburban Water, efficient management and prudent guidance from a business-minded board of directors have ensured stable rates.
“I believe in quality education at a reasonable cost. We need to look at other school districts in our area to determine what is reasonable. We need a balanced budget that is not a burden to the residents of the county. We need to look at cutting things, such as the pre-school program, which are not required until funds are available to cover the cost. The members of the school board need to hold the administration accountable to ensure fiscal responsibility. There are no easy answers, and every member of the school board needs to be up to the challenge of making the difficult decisions that will ensure fiscal responsibility and controlled costs. The voters will have the opportunity to change the direction of the school board by potentially electing a new majority, four new members to a seven-member board. A new direction is especially important for the school board since they will be tasked with determining who the new superintendant will be. Board members have a responsibility to look out for the best interests of all residents of their district.
