Bucks Fall to Green Wave 7-2
by Jim Morgan
FARWELL—The Bucktail baseball team cut down on a recent run of errors against Oswayo Valley on Monday, but also lacking was much offense, the Bucks putting up just three hits in losing 7-2 to the Green Wave, dropping the home team to 5-2 on the season.
In baseball, the category “Error” is the one column you try your best to keep a zero in; just as the Bucks took advantage of their 4-0 start with their opponents creating these errors. Bucktail took full advantage on running the bases and scoring runs. But last week it was the opponent taking advantage of Buck errors.
Last Wednesday Montgomery banged out 14 hits and ran for extra bases on seven Buck errors as they gave the Bucks their first loss of the season 20-3. Montgomery is a good hitting team as they jumped out in the first inning with 5 solid hits for 5 runs.
Lead-off hitter for the Bucks Chuck Probst drew a walk and stole second, then advanced to home plate on two passed balls; he finished the game with two monster hits of a triple and a double while scoring one more time. After two innings of play Montgomery led 8-1 after four errors on the Bucks.
Tony Saltsman started the game on the mound, coach Bill Probst handing the ball to Trent Risley in the third inning. Saltsman and Probst throw hard off the mound as Risley throws consistently around the plate and is not over-powering. This threw Montgomery hitters off as they extended the score to12-3 going into the sixth inning.
Sophomore Derrick Long and freshman Richard Probst of Bucktail each had a single. Coach Probst decided to give juniors Aaron Ransdorf and Collin Burrows some work on the mound in the sixth inning as Montgomery scored 8 more runs to finish the game.
On Thursday it was just the opposite as Bucktal pounded the ball for 14 hits and outscoring Benton 17-10. One of the area’s outstanding pitchers Chuck Probst got his start against the Tigers; he posted 19 strikeouts while facing 38 batters in the complete game. He did give up 5 walks and 6 hits, but the unforced errors by the Bucks gave Benton 6 unearned runs.
In the first inning Bucktail posted 5 runs on five hits as Saltsman doubled for a RBI. C. Probst, Burrows, Long and Ransdorf all singled as Ransdorf added two RBI’s. Benton answered right back on three unearned runs while scoring one more for a 5-4 Bucktail lead going into the second inning.
Risley started the second inning with a single then ended with a smashing double for 7 more runs. Saltsman and Burrows each had singles as Chris Spencer pounded one of his hard doubles in the inning. The Bucks were able to get three other runners on by walks. Benton would answer right back on two outs, with three straight solid hits as they scored two more runs. Score 12-6 Bucktail.
Benton would score two more runs in the third. This would be the closest they would come. Bucktail would score in the final four innings of play. Four of these runs would be unearned as Long hit a RBI single in the fifth inning. Benton would score its final two runs in the fifth inning, both unearned.
On Saturday the Bucks will travel to Millville for a doubleheader starting at 12:00 PM. Then the Bucks will return home next Thursday May 1st to host Williamson starting at 4:30 PM. See you at the Diamond!
