Helen Rhea Shaffer Kress – Obituary

Helen Rhea Shaffer Kress, 91, formerly of 387 Birch Street, Flemington, passed away Tuesday, April 8, 2014 at Susque View Home where she resided for just under a year.
Born in Loganton on April 13, 1922, she was one of twelve children born to the late William and Esther Cashner.
Helen was raised in Loganton and graduated from Sugar Valley High School.
She was married to Robert Shaffer who preceded her in death on October 11, 1971. Later Helen became the wife of John Kress who preceded her in death on October 21, 1994.
Helen worked for the Lock Haven Express as well as the Gainesville Times in Florida. After 23 years of working as a printer for the Patriot News of Harrisburg, she retired.
She was a member of the Covenant United Methodist Church.
Helen loved traveling and visited 49 of the 50 states. She also enjoyed reading, always having a book in her hand. Walking and watching the deer in her backyard were other sources of enjoyment for Helen.
She loved her family. Helen resided with her daughter, Sharon, for fourteen years before moving to Susque View. She spent nine of those years helping her daughter run a Bed and Breakfast. Helen also enjoyed the time she spend with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Helen was always full of life and brought joy to all she met with her wit and sense of humor.
In addition to her daughter, Sharon Best of Flemington, Helen is survived by two granddaughters: Robin Yeager of Heathrow, Florida and Diane Yeager Bethel of Odenton, Maryland; and two great grandchildren: Matthew Yeager and Ashtyn Bethel.
Along with Robert Shaffer and John Kress, she was preceded in death by three brothers and eight sisters.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 26, 2014 at 2 PM at the Covenant United Methodist Church, 44 West Main Street, Lock Haven, with Rev. Tanya Heatwole officiating. A luncheon will be held at the church from 12:30 PM until 1:30 PM. A visitation from 1:30 PM until the time of the service will follow. Burial will take place at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Loganton.
