Renninger’s Drains 3-Pointer for Late Lead

lhu-hoopsLOCK HAVEN – The Bald Eagles opened the second half on a 12-3 run to provide a spark and they hit several key shots in the game’s final minutes including the go-ahead 3-pointer from Central Mountain grad Cole Renninger which cemented the Lock Haven University men’s basketball team’s (7-6, 3-6 PSAC) 72-68 victory over visiting Millersville University (5-8, 4-5 PSAC) Monday night.

With Lock Haven trailing 67-65, Renninger drilled a 3-pointer with 39 seconds left in the game that put the Bald Eagles up for good. The 3-pointer put LHU up 68-67, while Jihad Barnes (Philadelphia/Philadelphia Electric Charter) and Amir Hinton (Philadelphia/Abington) both went 2 for 2 at the free-throw line in the final 24 seconds to extend The Haven lead, and ice the win.

Hinton finished with a team-high 19 points. He added a team-high nine rebounds, four steals, three assists and two blocks.

Ra’eese Hunt (Upper Marlboro, Md./Riverdale Baptist) finished with 18 points and Renninger netted 13.

Barnes chipped in with seven points and Craig Slade (Philadelphia/Constitution) capped a balanced scoring approach with six points.

Both Renninger and Barnes added seven rebounds.

Millersville led by nine at halftime, 39-30, but the Bald Eagles took their game to another level in the second half. A hot scoring run that resulted in a 12-3 stretch turned the momentum around quickly for Lock Haven and got LHU back in the game.

Lock Haven shot 57 percent in the second half and 49 percent for the game.

LHU head coach Mike Nestor’s team also elevated their effort on defense, particularly in the second half. In all, Lock Haven forced 13 turnovers.

Monday marked the start of a busy week for Lock Haven. The Bald Eagles will head to Cheyney on Wednesday, January 11 (7:30 p.m.), before hosting Shippensburg on Saturday, January 14 (4 p.m.).
