Wildcats Lead King of Mountain after Day One
BALD EAGLE TOWNSHIP—The Central Mountain wrestling team is nothing if not balanced and that balance has put the Wildcats in first place after the first day of their own King of the Mountain tournament.
The Wildcats have a remarkable 11 wrestlers still alive after nearly six hours of Friday night wrestling. Two of them, Geo Barzona at 120 pounds and Richie Thompson at heavyweight, are in the 11:30 a.m. semifinals while another nine will be part of Consolation Round IV at 10 a.m., needing one more win to assure themselves of placing between third and eighth at the prestigious event. They are: Johnny Shreffler at 103, Cody Coleman at 120, Seth Andrus at 126, Logan Long at 138, Colton Weaver at 145, Tanner Weaver at 170, Caleb Turner at 182, Tanner Riggle at 195 and Mahlik Houtz at 225.
All 14 team entrants picked up at least one win for the Wildcats, their collective effort producing 90 points to second place Boyertown with 88.5. Bishop McDevitt is third with 75 points in the 30-team field.
Central Mountain’s 90 point total already exceeds the 79 points scored a year ago in a 15th place finish.
The undefeated Barzona breezed into the semifinals with a 24-8 bout termination over Tyler Zellers of Greater Latrobe and a 13-3 win over Izek Brooks of Williamsport. The number two seed Barzona is to meet three seed Colin Leonard of Northern York in the semifinals. First year starter Richie Thompson, a five seed, pinned his way into the semis, a fall in 1:58 over Dalton Kriner of Williamsport and a quarterfinal fall in 3:57 over Andre Gibson of McDowell. Thompson draws top seed Oscar Daniels of Exeter in the next round.
