Promises he won’t make …

County commissioner Jeff Snyder is sticking to his words. He’s not promising a completion date for the new district magistrate’s office in Renovo. He said Tuesday the pace is about to increase on the renovations of the former Mattioli barber shop on Erie Avenue. But when asked when the office will be ready for occupation he wouldn’t give a projection completion date. In the past projected completion dates didn’t work out as predicted.

Rumor has it …

Rumor has it, not a clue if it’s true, but the scuttlebutt is that when I missed the Monday night Renovo Council session I missed an opportunity for some interesting rumors. One rumor was that a police officer who recently resigned then came back for administrative duty was suspended after he responded to a fight or incident of some kind in the police vehicle. Another rumor, again not a clue if it’s true, but rumor is that some of the dialog was so heated at the session that one council member is said to have quit. I’m curious. If the borough needs police as both council and residents believe, why did council settle for two part time positions to do administrative work? To catch up with paper work from last year? Or is the time needed to train new officers who will do patrol duty? Also, if the two officers who were laid off are hired back, as rumor has it that they are to be, will the administrative positions still be needed? Actually right now there are more rumors than police. And as is usually the case with rumors, there’s not a clue if they’re true. Like the rumors that the officers who were rehired for administrative duty were also promoted in rank. Like I said, there’s no clue if it’s true.

Volunteers needed …

Volunteers are a welcomed addition at Bucktail Medical Center, and there’s almost always an area of need. Currently volunteers are needed to help with the weekly hair setting for residents on Thursday mornings. No training is required; the volunteers do not do hair cuts or perms. The volunteers just set and comb hair and by doing so, give an added lift to the residents who get their hair done. Volunteers do need to check with Erica Dorman at Bucktail and may have to go through a brief training session watching videos but that needs cleared with Erica.

Tom T is on the campaign trail …

Renovo’s own Thomas Tarantella and his wife have been on the campaign trail as he seeks the 5th Congressional District seat. Tom is seeking the nomination of the Democratic Party for the 5th Congressional District of Pennsylvania in 2014. He was born in Williamsport Hospital and raised in Renovo. He and his wife Ann reside in East Renovo.

He and Ann have been married 31 years. They have three children and five grandchildren. He spent 22 years in the US Army and during his tenure was a member of the Rapid Deployment Force, a Paratrooper, and a Light Fighter. He was deployed around the world and was awarded 7 Campaign ribbons, a Bronze Star, 5 Meritorious Service Medals, 4 Army Commendation Medals, 13 Army Achievement Medals, and was honorably discharged in 2002

Penny candy …

During a recent conversation with Helen Newlen of North Bend, we were talking about memories. Helen reminisced about how when she was a kid, her dad, Sidney Barrows, would send her to a store that was located along Renovo Road with quarters. One quarter was for a pack of Lucky Strikes. The cigarette machine took quarters, but the Lucky Strikes were just 23 cents a pack. The cigarettes would come with two pennies change in the cellophane wrapper. Helen would use the pennies to get four Tootsie Rolls. They were two for a penny. Those were the days.

Snow removal …

Penn Dot trucks would be able to get rid of a lot more snow along Huron Avenue if people would move their vehicles off the street during snow storms. If the cars are parked along the street, PennDOT cannot plow along the curb. If the vehicles are moved, the plows could get right up to the curb. Rumor has it that Renovo has a snow emergency route in place, but it has not been enforced.
