LHU Football Topped by Shippensburg, 38-16
LOCK HAVEN – The Lock Haven University football team built a 16-10 halftime lead over Shippensburg on Saturday, but six turnovers proved too much to overcome as the Red Raiders pulled away in the second half for a 38-16 win.
The Bald Eagles’ record-setting quarterback Caleb Walton (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central) had another big day, throwing for a career-high 457 yards and two touchdowns, but in the end it wasn’t enough to spark the Lock Haven University football team (0-5, 0-2 PSAC East) past visiting Shippensburg (4-1, 2-0 PSAC East).
Walton’s 457 yards are believed to be the fourth-most ever in a single game for a Lock Haven quarterback. Walton now has 56 career passing TDs and he’s just five away from breaking the all-time career record for passing touchdowns.
Shawn Seif (Harrisburg, Pa./Kutztown University), the top wide receiver in Division II had another big game. He racked up 178 yards on nine catches including one that went for a 73-yard TD. Seif has at least once touchdown-reception in all five games this season and he now has five TD-catches of 25-yards or more on the season.
The Bald Eagles led 16-10 at halftime, thanks to the play of Walton and Seif, as well as tight end Del’Vaughn Dennis (Enola, Pa./East Pennsboro), who hauled in a 26-yard TD pass early in the game to open the scoring.
Dennis’ 26-yard TD catch less than five minutes into the game put LHU up 7-0 and Seif’s long TD jolt with 3:27 left in the half put Lock Haven up 16-10.
Shippensburg scored 28 unanswered points in the second half to pull away for Lock Haven for the important Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East win.
John Ford (Etters, Pa./Shippensburg), who got the start at running back, carried the ball nine times for 39 yards.
Dennis finished with eight catches for 117 yards.
Defensively, LHU played well, especially in the first half.
Defensive backs Rahjeir Miles-Eubanks (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) and Isaiah Flamer (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) led the way as each registered 11 tackles. Flamer also had an interception.
Carmelo Cruz (Lancaster, Pa. /Lancaster Catholic) added eight tackles.
The Bald Eagles will head to Cheyney University (1-3) on Saturday, October 8 for Week 6 action (1 p.m.).
