Sugar Valley Woman Scammed; State Police Urge Caution

psp-logoLOGANTON — An elderly Sugar Valley woman was recently bilked out of $1,794 and state police are urging vigilance relative to suspicious phone calls.

Police said the victim was an 85-year-old Loganton resident. Their report said she received a phone calling telling her she had won $2-million. The police report said the caller requested the woman send her money via Western Union to “preserve” her winnings; the caller then called back and requested additional money for “taxes.”

The woman, who was not identified, was defrauded out of $1,794. Police reminded residents not to send anyone any money to “reserve” or “preserve” a prize or winnings; police said residents should not send payment to anyone via iTunes cards or GreenDot cards. They said no legitimate business will request any of these forms of payment.

Police said the incident happened in late June. They released the report today.
